Railroad Public Projects Manager - Electrical (Remote)

Benesch is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Public Projects Manager with an Electrical Engineering Degree and railroad signaling experience to join our Railroad Division. This position is ideal for someone with 2-7 years of experience looking to grow in project management within the railroad industry. You'll work under the mentorship of seasoned project managers and industry veterans, many of whom are former railroad employees.

This role focuses on managing public projects related to railroad signal infrastructure, including DOT and local agency coordination, right-of-way impacts, and crossing safety improvements. You'll support projects primarily in California and Arizona, with the flexibility of a remote work arrangement.

Benesch's Railroad Division is made up of highly skilled rail professionals, many of whom are former employees of operating railroads. Location

Candidates must be located in the Western U.S., with a strong preference for Southern California or Arizona, to support regional projects and enable occasional travel to job sites.

The Impact You Will Have



  • Manage and support railroad signal-focused public projects involving local and state agencies.
  • Review preliminary project submittals affecting railroad signal systems and right-of-way.
  • Coordinate with railroad signal departments, DOT representatives, consultants, and developers.
  • Ensure safe and efficient integration of public infrastructure with railroad signaling operations.
  • Monitor project scope, schedule, and budgets, reporting updates to project stakeholders.
  • Participate in field inspections and construction coordination for signal-related installations (approx. 90% office-based, 10% travel).
  • Maintain up-to-date project records and contribute to project databases.
  • Assist in preparing reports, correspondence, and compliance documentation.
  • Attend and facilitate project meetings, representing Benesch and client interests.
  • Help manage consultant deliverables and coordinate sub-consultant tasks.
  • Assist in conflict resolution, contract reviews, and regulatory approvals.



What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering required; emphasis in railroad signaling is a strong plus.
  • 2-7 years of professional experience in railroad signal engineering, traffic/railroad interconnect, state department of transportation railroad project management, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in railroad signaling design and installation.
  • Familiarity with FRA, AREMA, and DOT standards and processes.
  • Experience working with public agencies on railroad or signal projects preferred.
  • Strong project management, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, PDF markup tools, and basic project management software.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Must be detail-oriented and eager to grow into a stronger project management role.
  • An ideal candidate will have an ownership mentality.
  • California or Arizona residency strongly preferred; remote/hybrid work options available based on proximity to Benesch offices.
