Job Description Summary
The Lewis University Police Department is a trained, professional organization committed to providing a safe and secure educational and working environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. The Campus Safety Officer is a member of the Police Department professional staff. The function of the Campus Safety Officer is to maintain security and safety for assigned areas, effectively respond to requests for service and enforce University policies. Campus Safety Officers are part of the University's team of first responders equipped to assist in various emergency and non-emergency situations.

Responsibilities
Responsible to model the University Mission through dedicated job performance, service excellence to constituents, respectful collaboration and active support of the University's Catholic and LaSallian Mission.

-Act as one of the University's first responders equipped to assist in various emergency and non-emergency situations.
-React quickly and calmly to emergency situations, determine an appropriate course of action and ensure an appropriate response utilizing tact, diplomacy and good judgment to resolve the issue.
-Provide first-responder first aid including CPR and utilization of an AED.
-Understand basic emergency response principles.
-Respond to and investigate fire and burglar alarm activations.
-Assist in implementation of the University Emergency Operations Plan as prescribed.
-Participate in routine patrol and security activities.
-Provide campus wide security patrol on foot and in vehicles to protect the University's students, faculty staff, real property and equipment; reporting any observed disturbances, irregularities, hazards or suspicious circumstances.
-Provide assistance with investigation of suspicious and/or criminal occurrences on campus.
-Assist police, fire and public safety agencies as necessary.
-Provide functional supervision to student workers as assigned.
-Regulate access to the campus after hours in compliance with University policy.
-Operate and service department vehicles safely and in compliance with all applicable Illinois Vehicle Code
provisions and University policy.
-Perform individual post functions as set forth in department orders including checking, locking and opening University buildings and offices.
-Providing motorist assistance such as vehicle unlocks and jump-starts.
-Maintain working knowledge of the locations of various departments, buildings, key personnel and access
routes.
-Provide security escorts to students and others upon request.
-Perform crowd control duties as necessary during special events or emergency incidents.
-Perform various required errands such as bank deposits and equipment and vehicle pick-ups and drop-offs.
-Control vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow. -Enforce University Behavioral standards and policies firmly, tactfully, equally, and with respect for the rights of others.
-Enforce University traffic and parking regulations.
-Demonstrate an understanding of department policy regarding limits of authority.
-Possess an ability to manage conflict in unstructured, controversial or complex situations.
-Staff the police Communications Center.
-Answer phone calls and dispatch police personnel as necessary.
-Monitor and dispatch fire and burglar alarm activations.
-Facilitate campus notification according to department policy.
-Answer general information questions concerning directions, parking and campus regulations.
-Utilize computer aided dispatching software, electronic records management applications and paperless report writing programs to effectively document and record department activities and responses.
-Perform functions relating to emergency and routine radio and telephone communications.
-Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate in various situations through various mediums:
-Write reports and maintain appropriate documentation according to departmental standards.
-Ascertain facts by personal contact, observation, and examination of record.
-Participate in the development and presentation of crime prevention programming and community education.
-Collaborate with Residence Life staff and other key Student Services departments to provide
programming and community outreach.
-Appear as needed in University judicial hearings and criminal and traffic court.
-Assist in field training of new staff as required.
-Courteously greet and assist the public by providing prompt, flexible and user-friendly customer service.
-Use appropriate discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information.
-Interact and support team efforts within and between the University's divisions and departments.
-Understand and execute difficult verbal and/or written instructions and guidelines.
-Campus Safety Officers may be required to work overtime on an as needed basis and may be called upon to perform other assigned duties as required by the Deputy Chief or Chief of Police.
Minimum Qualifications
-Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma.
-Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license with a good driving record.
-Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
-Ability to walk, run, climb, provide assistance to persons in distress, operate required equipment, work outdoors in a variety of adverse weather conditions.
-Must be able to work with flexible schedules involving evening, weekend and holiday work.
Preferred Qualifications
The most qualified candidates will have successfully completed some level of post-secondary education and have previous public safety experience in addition to being proficient in common business computer software applications such as email, word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software.

Full-time, Schedule varies, but may include nights, weekends and holidays.
