Overview The OB Technician assists with functions performed within the Labor and Delivery Unit. The primary responsibility is to function as a scrub technician in both vaginal and cesarean sections deliveries. This individual provides additional support to the nursing staff through the collection of data, such as vital signs and intake/output. QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION REQUIRED High School Diploma or equivalent EDUCATION PREFERRED None LICENSURES OR CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED Current American Heart Association BCLS certification LICENSURES OR CERTIFICATIONS PREFERRED None EXPERIENCE REQUIRED None EXPERIENCE PREFERRED One year experience ROLE SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Direct Patient Care Duties: Under the direction of the registered nurse, demonstrates ability to collect patient-related data. Vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure) Intake and output Under the direction of the licensed nurse, may connect OB patient to external fetal heart monitor. The licensed nurse is responsible for assuring accuracy of placement and tracings. Answers patient call lights and refers patient needs to appropriate staff. Bathes and cleans patients as needed and as directed by licensed nurse. May remove IV catheter under the direction of a licensed nurse. May perform straight urinary catheterization under the direction of a licensed nurse. Normal newborn hearing screens may be performed once proper training has been completed. Transportation of maternal and infant patients between units in maternity areas. Performs bathing and dressing of fetal demise patients and takes fetal demise pictures. 2. Information Management Duties: Demonstrates ability to perform basic clerical duties as needed to assure smooth operation of the Labor/Delivery unit. Gathers slick sheet, footprint supplies, and infant identification bands. Assists the licensed nurse with the identification procedure. Activates Lullaby shortly after birth occurs. 3. Technical/Assistive Duties: Demonstrates ability to set up, breakdown and restock patient rooms for both vaginal and cesarean section deliveries. Clean instruments and equipment as per policy Restocks LDR's and OR's routinely (excluding medications unless is a licensed LPN) Demonstrates ability to pass instruments to the physician during both vaginal and cesarean section deliveries. Cleans monitors, cribs, IV pumps and open bed warmers daily. Inspects each LDR for thoroughness of cleaning prior to admitting a patient to that room and after housekeeping has cleaned it. Informs charge nurse of need for additional cleaning. Makes sure each room has appropriate equipment and furniture, includes cleaning and organizing room #1 (overflow room) each shift.
