Job Summary:

The Research Specialist will join Dr. Bruce Barrett's research team at the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health assisting with respiratory/sinusitis studies. They will work directly with study team members and research participants ensuring that data and specimens are properly collected to ensure that all study objectives are met. This position requires excellent interpersonal and organizational skills as well as attention to detail and flexibility. Evening and weekend work is expected.


Responsibilities:
Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.

  • 35% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 25% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 10% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 10% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 10% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 10% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Qualifications:

Required:
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
-Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and interact professionally with study participants, collaborators, and study team members.
-Experience using clinical and/or social science research methods
-Experience using REDCap database
-Experience working in a clinical and/or medical setting
-Experience working with study participants of all ages including pediatric population

Preferred:
-Experience using Advarra payment system
-Familiarity with conducting literature searches and writing and editing manuscripts
-Experience collecting nasal swabs and/or nasal/oral pharyngeal swabs and running rapid and or rapid PCR tests
-Experience collecting blood specimens and running rapid CRP tests


License/Certification:

Required
Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards
Travel is required to clinics in the Madison and surrounding areas. Must provide a valid driver's license. Employees may use their own transportation or receive approval for University Car Fleet usage. Employment is conditional pending the results of a Pre-hire Driver Authorization Check. It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.


Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 7 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding


Salary:

Minimum $45,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

The starting salary for the position is $45,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

The University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is a large, tier-one clinical department in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH). UW DFMCH has 171 faculty, 261 adjunct faculty, and 110 staff located throughout the state. Combined with its associated UW Health clinic operation, the department boasts over 750 total employees transforming health care in Wisconsin. This position is currently scheduled to end July 31, 2025 and will require eligibility to work until that time.
