Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Public Administration at North Carolina Central University is dedicated to preparing leaders for effective service in public and nonprofit sectors. Through rigorous instruction, innovative research, and community engagement, we equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address complex public management challenges, and foster a commitment to public service and community development.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Public Administration at North Carolina Central University seeks a dynamic scholar-practitioner at the Assistant Professor level in this tenure-track faculty position. This faculty member will be a member of core faculty of the NASPAA-Accredited MPA Program. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in advancing our mission and preparing leaders for public service. We are particularly seeking individuals with expertise and a desire to teach in quantitative methods, public sector economics, finance and budgeting, or in other domains relevant to our Department.
The primary responsibilities of this tenure-track faculty position encompass a range of academic activities essential to our department's success. The candidate will teach core and elective courses in both face-to-face and online formats, engage in active research and pursue external funding opportunities, and provide mentorship and advising to our student body. Additionally, this role will contribute to curriculum development, program assessment, and participate in community service initiatives, aligned with the core values of our department. The role also includes supervising internships, theses, and certifications, further enriching our students' educational experience. Additional leadership roles in the department may be required commensurate with rank.
This position is vital in upholding NCCU's legacy as a premier Historically Black College and University ( HBCU). The successful candidate will be instrumental in fostering an effective learning environment and preparing students to become transformative leaders in public administration. By contributing to our department's teaching, research, and service goals, the new faculty member will help shape the next generation of public servants while addressing critical issues facing underserved communities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ph.D. in Public Administration or a closely related field from an accredited institution. ABD (All But Dissertation) candidates may be considered if degree completion is expected by the start date.
2. Evidence of a strong record of achievement in teaching and research consistent with an appointment at the rank of assistant professor under the NCCU Department of Public Administration Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure ( RPT) criteria.
3. Demonstrated capability to teach core public administration courses, with particular expertise preferred in quantitative methods, public sector economics, finance and budgeting, or related areas.
4. Experience or capability in teaching both face-to-face and online courses.
5. Active research agenda with a record of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals.
6. Demonstrated ability or potential to secure external funding through grants, contracts, or other sources.
7. Commitment to mentoring and advising students, such as supervision of internships and theses.
8. Evidence of professional development, such as presentation of papers at professional meetings and involvement in professional organizations.
9. Ability to contribute to curriculum development and program assessment activities.
10. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and external stakeholders.
11. Commitment to public service and community engagement.
