Job Description |
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for a nine-month, Dental Hygiene faculty position in the School of Health Professions to start Fall 2025 (i.e., August 16, 2025).
Responsibilities include teaching college level courses in Dental Hygiene in both a classroom and clinic setting. Faculty members teach approximately 15 credits per semester for a total of approximately 30 credits per academic year. This workload may include face-to-face and hybrid/distance learning courses during the day and evening, on weekdays and weekends. In addition to teaching, all faculty members advise students, serve on college committees, and participate in other activities that support the mission of the college. Such activities may include, but are not limited to, departmental meetings and curriculum planning, programmatic assessment, course and program evaluation, community service, club sponsorship, student recruitment and retention activities, and mentoring new and part-time faculty.
Candidates selected for an interview will conduct a 15-minute teaching session on a pre-selected topic. Additional details will be provided when interviews are scheduled. |

KSA's/Required Qualifications |
A current licensed dental hygienist or dentist (either by the Virginia Board of Dentistry or eligible for a Virginia license) who is a graduate of a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (
CODA).
Possession of a Bachelor's degree or higher in any field prior to the anticipated start of the position, August 16, 2025.
At least two years of clinical experience with nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
Ability to provide student instruction in the classroom and clinic settings.
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point.
Comprehensive knowledge of Dental Hygiene theories, concepts, and practices with the ability to navigate complex, difficult and/or unprecedented situations.
Strong organizational and time-management skills with a results-oriented mindset.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, the ability to work with diverse populations and provide excellent customer service to faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a dynamic and changing work environment requiring flexibility and teamwork.
Ability to positively promote and represent the Dental Hygiene Program.
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certificate (
CPR/
AED). |
Additional Considerations |
Teaching experience in a dental hygiene,
CODA accredited program.
Knowledge of online learning management platforms for higher education such as Blackboard and/or Canvas.
