Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for a full-time, nine-month Medical Laboratory Technology ( MLT) Faculty in the School of Health Professions beginning August 16, 2025.

Responsibilities include teaching college level courses in Medical Laboratory Technology, as well as serving as the Program Head for the Associate of Applied Science MLT Program which involves administrative responsibilities such as curriculum development, course and program assessments, continuous quality improvement, budget planning/preparation, purchasing, mentoring program faculty/staff, National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences ( NAACLS) accreditation management, as well as clinical site obtainment and coordination. Faculty teaching responsibilities may include face-to-face and hybrid/distance-learning courses, as well as on-campus labs during the day and evening, on weekdays and weekends.

In addition to teaching and program head duties, this faculty member will advise students, serve on college committees, and participate in other activities that support the mission of the college. Such activities may include, but are not limited to: accreditation activities, institutional effectiveness activities, club sponsorship, student recruitment, course and program evaluation, community service, and mentoring new and part-time faculty. Faculty are expected to maintain currency in their teaching disciplines and in trends in community college education.

Candidates selected for an interview will conduct a 15-minute teaching session on a pre-selected topic. Additional details will be provided when interviews are scheduled.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
Master's Degree in Medical Lab Technology, a science field, or a related field, as well as a Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science ( MLS or MT degree).
Must hold an ASCP- BOC or ASCP- BOC generalist certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist.
A minimum of 2 years of experience in a health professions setting.
A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience.
Ability to utilize current classroom technology and experience using Microsoft Office software (e.g., Word, Outlook).
Willingness and ability to provide student instruction in the classroom, lab, and clinical settings.
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certificate.
Additional Considerations
Doctorate in Medical Lab Technology, a science-related field, or a health science field.
Knowledge of NAACLS accreditation procedures and certification procedures.
Student-focused with experience teaching students in a community college setting.
Demonstrated familiarity with academic advising, student success, and retention efforts in the educational setting.
Experience using classroom technology (Canvas, Panopto, PowerPoint, etc.) is preferred.
Experience providing student instruction in the classroom, lab, and clinical settings.

Some travel required (e.g., to other community colleges, clinical sites within our service region, as well as clinical sites in southwest and central Virginia). State vehicles are available for most business-related travel.
