Job Description |
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for a nine-month, Biology faculty (Environmental Studies Specialization) position in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (
STEM).
Responsibilities include teaching college level courses in Biology and Environmental Studies, as well as serving as the Program Head for the Integrated Environmental Studies Specialization which involves administrative responsibilities such as curriculum development, outreach, and marketing. Faculty members teach approximately 15 credits per semester for a total of approximately 30 credits per academic year. This workload may include face-to-face and hybrid/distance learning courses during the day and evening, on weekdays and weekends. In addition to teaching, all faculty members advise students, serve on college committees, and participate in other activities that support the mission of the college. Such activities may include, but are not limited to, departmental meetings and curriculum planning, programmatic assessment, course and program evaluation, community service, club sponsorship, student recruitment and retention activities, and mentoring new and part-time faculty.
Candidates selected for an interview will conduct a 15-minute teaching session on a pre-selected topic. Additional details will be provided when interviews are scheduled. |

KSA's/Required Qualifications |
Master's Degree in a Natural Resources field or master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Natural Resources, Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife, Ecology, Environmental Science or closely related field. Ability to teach a variety of courses including General Biology, and specialized Environmental Science courses (e.g., Ecology, Environmental Compliance, Forestry, etc.). Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. A commitment to encouraging and fostering student success and demonstrated knowledge of the use of technology in the classroom. |
Additional Considerations |
PhD in Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or related field. Teaching experience in a college setting, preferably a community college. Experience with online instruction, curriculum development, marketing and outreach, and/or grant writing. Experience teaching or working in Environmental Sciences or related field (e.g., Wildlife Resources, Forestry, Conservation and Recreation, Fish and Wildlife Services, Environmental Management, etc.). |
