Position Summary:

Airbus U.S. is looking for an enthusiastic and creative electronics hardware engineer to support the testing and development of next-generation spacecraft avionics PCB assemblies and modules. We're looking for candidates who can bring exceptional hardware testing skills to support our small-satellite avionics development program.

Position Responsibilities:

The Electronics Hardware Engineer's primary responsibility will be contributing to the testing and development of avionics circuit boards and higher-level assemblies for Airbus U.S.'s next-generation small-satellite avionics. The Engineer will be heavily involved in the process of initial board bring-up, debugging, testing, requirements verification, and design revisioning across the hardware development life-cycle from prototypes to flight models. Being at the cutting edge of space technology, we need someone who is eager to learn, grow, and take on new and potentially unfamiliar challenges. There is no shortage of fascinating problems to solve.

The Electronics Hardware Engineer will provide support for complex assignments, under the leadership of the program's Lead Principal Engineer and the Avionics Engineering Manager.

Hardware Bring-Up, Debugging, Testing, and Verification ~ 70%



  • Utilize requirements specifications, electrical schematics, and circuit board design files to support board bring-up and the development of test plans for the verification of functional, performance, and quality requirements of circuit cards and assembled modules.
  • Develop wiring harnesses and breakout boards to support lab-based testing and hardware bring-up.
  • Setup and operate test equipment for the testing of digital and analog circuit boards, including the use of COTS chassis, bench top power supplies, oscilloscopes, multimeters, etc.
  • Development of test scripts and execution of hardware plans for board bring-up, debugging, and testing.
  • Generation of test and verification reports to document results and findings.


Technical Support for Hardware Manufacturing ~ 20%



  • Support the development of requirements specifications and procedures for Printed Circuit Board (PCB) fabrication, assembly, and inspection.
  • Support the procurement and assembly of structural and thermal hardware for electronics module assembly (heat sinks, support brackets, etc.).
  • Creation of re-work orders for prototype hardware.


Additional Responsibilities ~ 10%



  • Support the selection, procurement, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and setups.
  • Support working groups, both internal and with subcontractors.
  • Systems Engineering support and cross-disciplinary team support.


Qualified Experience / Skills / Training:

Education:



  • Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technical, Engineering, Math) or related scientific areas.


Experience:



  • A minimum of 3 years with a Bachelor's degree, or 1 year with a Master's degree.
  • Proven track-record of working with electronics hardware and/or hardware systems, including design, development, manufacture, integration, and test.


Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:



  • High proficiency in oral and written technical communication.
  • Insatiable curiosity and a demonstrated ability to learn and work independently.
  • Proficiency in the use of common electronics laboratory test equipment (power supplies, oscilloscopes, multimeters, etc.) for board bring-up and debugging.
  • Ability to parse technical requirements documents and circuit board design files for the support of board bring-up, debugging, and testing.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following:

    • Embedded hardware development, manufacturing, and testing.
    • Test board and test wiring harness design.
    • Test script development in Python and/or C/C++.




Travel Required: Position requires regular on-site work in the program's electronics development laboratory located in University Park, Pennsylvania. Occasional travel to the facilities of Airbus U.S. Space & Defense and the facilities of its subcontractors will also be required.

Clearance:



  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
  • Active U.S. DoD security clearance at Secret or above highly desirable.


Physical Requirements:



  • Vision: able to see and read computer screen and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents
  • Hearing: able to hear to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds including safety warnings or alarms
  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors): able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment
  • Carrying: able to carry documents, electronic equipment and/or supplies up to 40lbs/9kg
  • Lifting: able to lift documents, electronic equipment and/or supplies up to 40lbs/9kg
  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on computer
  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to occasionally squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items shelved on bottom shelves
  • Standing: able to stand for long periods of time
  • Walking: able to walk through office and outside areas including uneven surfaces
