A Brief Overview In conjunction with KOPH Lab Medical Director, KOPH Lab administrative leadership, Philadelphia campus Blood Bank Medical Director, and Philadelphia campus Blood Bank Lab administrative leadership, the System Blood Bank Supervisor is held responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures for Blood Bank across CHOP; develops and oversees sustainable training program for technologists, technicians, and other related personnel; ensures Blood Bank workflow coverage across current and future community hospital and specialty care sites with Blood Bank operations; and supervises performance of such duties. The System Blood Bank Supervisor is responsible for providing high-level expertise to support community hospital and specialty care sites for both laboratory staff and clinical teams. System Blood Bank Supervisor works in collaboration with Philadelphia campus Blood Bank leadership, Quality Manager, Faculty, the Chief of Community Medicine and site leadership.
What you will do
- Blood Bank training program for current and future community hospital and specialty care site laboratory staff
Develops sustainable training program for laboratory staff that meets the technical requirements necessary for site Blood Bank responsibilities Develops trainers to provide a high-quality training environment Evaluates trainers and trainees on an ongoing basis Supports MLS education program Supports fellowship education Organizes continuing education (CE) opportunities for staff - Assures that licensing and accreditation requirements are in full compliance
Participates and passes all proficiency testing Stays within federal and state guidelines Ensures all procedure manuals are up to date Reviews procedure manuals annually - Assists in managing supply and inventory
- Contributes to positive outcomes and professionalism in the laboratory which promotes the cultural expectations of CHOP
- Total Quality Management (TQM)/Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)
Supports TQM/CQI initiatives Inter/Intra departmental quality committees - Works with Blood Bank Manager to ensure document control of the department SOPs, labels and forms including oversight of change control.
- Participate in at least one committee during year
Provides an environment of open communication - Uniform Standards for Managers
Supports operation as needed (including but not limited to: bench work, on-call support, leading huddles) Establishes department standards of excellence; assures consistent implementation by all staff. Establishes integrated systems which improve services and are supportive of the Hospital's mission. Develops, tests, implements, and evaluates new and creative approaches to meeting departmental and institutional goals. Integrates trends in healthcare and own profession to forecast future departmental and institutional needs for program development, space, and financial resources. Creates/supports an environment that fosters teamwork, cooperation, respect, and diversity. Recruits, coaches, develops, and retains qualified, competent staff. Ensures staff meets all requirements of position. Creates and maintains an environment where staff feel valued, appreciated, and recognized. Demonstrates an effective open door communication policy and process with staff. Prepares and monitors budget(s) for assigned area(s). Supports, enforces, and interprets institutional/departmental policies and procedures. Compiles with CHOP safety, infection control and security policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment. Participates in professional and community activities. - Other duties as assigned
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree Science related field Required
- Bachelor's Degree Medical Laboratory Science (Specialist in Blood Bank Technology (SBB) preferred) Preferred
Experience Qualifications
- At least five (5) years of experience in a Blood Bank Preferred
- Experience with GTP GMP and external assessments of AABB, CAP, JC & FDA. Preferred

- Ability to work independently (Required proficiency)
- Strong writing and presentation skills (Required proficiency)
- Excellent communications and group facilitation skills (Required proficiency)
- Ability to manage competing responsibilities and work well with others to meet project timelines. (Required proficiency)
- Demonstrated technical excellence in blood banking (Preferred proficiency)
- High degree of familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Preferred proficiency)
