A Brief Overview

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) have joined together to support a National Institutes of Health (NIH) program called Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO), a large, observational child health research study began in 2016 to try to answer big questions about how influences in early human development, even before birth, affect us throughout our lives and across generations. The ECHO program is focused on five areas of children's health: pregnancy and birth, breathing, body weight, brain development, and well-being. By enrolling 2500 pregnant individuals and their children from diverse backgrounds (racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically). In addition, investigators have developed the Postpartum Care in the NICU (PeliCaN) Transitions study, a research program at CHOP and Penn that focuses on optimizing postpartum care for NICU families, specifically serving a high-risk, low-income, majority Black population. Through doula support, healthcare partnerships, and management strategies, it addresses breastfeeding disparities, information needs, and mental health by collaborating with NICU teams and community organizations, with plans for future expansion.

The Patient Resource Navigator will play a critical role in both the ECHO and PeliCaN research programs at CHOP by fostering meaningful connections through addressing participants' needs and guiding them through both research and postpartum care processes with sensitivity and care. Key responsibilities include building trust through consistent communication with participants, study teams, and hospital staff; offering guidance in navigating critical resources; monitoring participant progress; and maintaining accurate data for both studies. This position requires a compassionate individual who will collaborate with the research staff, leadership, and study participants to provide holistic, participant-centered support.

This role is integral in supporting the emotional well-being, resource access, and engagement of participants throughout their respective journeys in the ECHO and/or PeliCaN projects, ensuring a supportive and meaningful research experience.
