Tenure Track Assistant Professor - Environmental Health Sciences

The Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work at Florida International University is ranked by U.S. News & World Report No.1 in South Florida amongst public and private schools of public health and 35th amongst all public universities nationwide. The college also ranks 12th in NIH funding in public universities by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. Stempel College is located in Miami, a vibrant and multi-cultural city near beautiful Miami Beach and the world-famous Florida Keys. Miami is the gateway to Latin America and the world.

Stempel College seeks energetic and visionary faculty with expertise in the broad field of environmental health sciences, including but not limited to toxicology, exposure assessment, occupational health and safety, and precision environmental health. The successful candidate will be expected to build upon the departments strengths and support our vision to be leaders in advancing research that improves public health through understanding the impact of pollutants and the exposome on chronic diseases. The ideal candidate will show potential for producing and supporting impactful research, including pursuing extramural funding, and will demonstrate interest in educating and training students in the department. We are now accepting applications for a tenure-earning Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) within the College of Public Health.

The Department of EHS research addresses health effects related to environmental hazards through research, education, and service to promote healthier lives. The department includes extramurally funded faculty with research expertise in environmental exposure monitoring, stem cell biology, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, gene-environment interactions, cancer, mental health, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases. The EHS department houses one of FIU designated Emerging Preeminent Programs: Brain, Behavior, & the Environment (BBE). The department was recently awarded a new Training Grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) entitled Training in Environmental Neuroscience that is housed at Stempel College in collaboration with other units of the university, including Psychology and Biomedical Engineering. We are also implementing a cohort of 9/11 WTC responders residing in Florida focused on a wide spectrum of research on cancer, mental health, cognitive impairment, respiratory and dysmetabolic long term impacts of 9/11 exposures.

Expectations and Responsibilities:

The hired faculty is expected to provide leadership support and advance the Department research, academic, and service programs. The candidate is also expected to engage in extramurally funded research, teach and advise graduate students, and serve on dissertation committees. The successful applicant will have a record of scholarship, funded research, or potential to develop an externally funded program, and whose research proposal demonstrates an excellent fit with institutional strategic goals and the aims of the position.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in a field relevant to environmental or occupational health. Competitive applicants should have a track record of peer-reviewed publications, effective teaching in the relevant discipline, extramural collaborative funded research, or potential to establish an externally funded program and secure extramural support as Principal Investigator.
