Registered Professional Forester (RPF)

Location: Cameron Park, CA

Pay: $85,000 - $100,000 annually

Position Summary:

CTL Forestry is seeking a skilled Registered Professional Forester (RPF) who is motivated, collaborative, and passionate about forestry work. The role will focus on optimizing forestry operations through field studies, project management, and data analysis, while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in forest management, strong problem-solving skills, and be excited to work on diverse and challenging forestry projects. This position requires fieldwork in various terrains and conditions, with the ability to travel to project sites as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Forest Management and Operations:



  • Develop treatment prescriptions and operational plans for forest restoration, fuels reduction, and timber harvesting on both private and public lands.
  • Supervise field projects, including layout, marking, and timber cruising.
  • Manage project implementation, including biological/botanical scoping, harvest document preparation (THP's, Exemptions), and hazard tree assessments.
  • Administer contracts for restoration projects such as thinning and mastication, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., NEPA, CEQA).


2. Data Collection and Field Studies:



  • Conduct on-site assessments to monitor forest and timber harvesting operations, including environmental and operational factors that impact efficiency (e.g., terrain, weather).
  • Perform time and motion studies in the field and analyze data using specialized software to optimize forestry operations.
  • Record productivity measures and prepare detailed reports to recommend improvements.


3. Project Planning and Reporting:



  • Prepare timber sale documentation and manage project bidding and proposals.
  • Conduct feasibility analyses and cost estimations for treatment options.
  • Lead projects as the primary client contact, ensuring communication and collaboration with contractors and stakeholders.
  • Present findings, recommendations, and project updates to management and other relevant parties.


4. GIS Mapping and Analysis:



  • Utilize GIS technology for mapping and spatial analysis, both in-office and in the field.
  • Ensure accurate data quality control and provide leadership in unit layout and check cruising operations.


5. Collaboration and Training:



  • Work closely with logging crews, subcontractors, and equipment operators to gather accurate field data and provide guidance on improving operational efficiency.
  • Supervise daily activities of forest technicians and provide on-the-job training where necessary.


Job Conditions:



  • Work performed both in the field and in-office; fieldwork involves rugged terrain and variable weather conditions.
  • Must have a personal vehicle suitable for forest environments.
  • Periodic overnight travel and site work may be required.


Qualifications:



  • California RPF license (or eligibility to take the exam at the next opportunity).
  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in forest management and timber harvesting operations.
  • Working knowledge of California Forest Practice Rules.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Esri's ArcGIS.
  • Strong communication skills, problem-solving ability, and leadership skills.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to complete fieldwork in rugged terrain.
