General Information:

Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) assists students and organizations in making healthy and safe decisions, creating positive experiences, and providing a space for belonging among FSL students. FSL is a part of the Office of Student Life, whose mission is to foster belonging through the personal growth and development of an engaged citizenry by providing welcoming experiences and spaces.
The role of the Fraternity and Sorority Life Graduate Assistant will include supporting one of the two FSL organization governing councils, assisting in supervision of student office staff, and helping with community wide programming throughout the year.

A graduate assistant in the office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is expected to work 20 hours a week. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be necessary due to the nature of our programming. All graduate assistants in Student Life are expected to attend departmental staff meetings and sponsored professional development opportunities as schedule permits.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Participating in FSL staff meetings and professional development opportunities
* Co-advising, with a professional staff member, the Interfraternity or Panhellenic Council
o Serving as a mentor to one or more council executive board members (this is not a
formal supervisory relationship; however, the student should discuss with their
supervisor if they wish to obtain supervisory experience)
o Providing regular feedback and advice regarding council activities, programs, etc.
o Attending council events and providing logistical support
o Assisting in the preparation and management of council budget
* Developing a vision for and implementing several large-scale FSL events (e.g. hazing
prevention and education, chapter accreditation, Greek Sing, Residence Life, etc.)
* Assisting in the development and administration of training and continuing education for Student and Office Assistants, House Managers, and/or fraternity and sorority leaders
* Advising undergraduate student leaders on accountability procedures and, if necessary, serving as a hearing officer for alleged violations of policy by organizations
* Providing outreach and information to campus and local community partners through
presentations, meetings, outreach programs, etc.
* Serving in an on-call rotation and responding to emergencies as they arise
* Providing broad logistical support for all assessments conducted by FSL
* Completing other duties as assigned and/or according to the student's professional and personal interests/goals

Qualifications:

Ability to commit to a year-long assistantship (academic year)
Able to begin working August 10th
Comfortable with public speaking and workshop/meeting facilitation
Excellent written and verbal communication
Basic understanding of involvement and student organizations, particularly in the realm of Fraternity and Sorority Organizations
Strongly preferred to be affiliated with a (Inter)National Social Greek-Lettered Organization
Able and willing to work independently on projects
Able and willing to attend appropriate trainings to access JMU systems (Cascade/Question Pro)
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple duties and assignments

Conditions of Employment:

Students may apply to a graduate assistantship prior to being accepted into a graduate program. However, to be eligible to receive an assistantship upon entry into a graduate program, the following criteria must be met:

The student must be conditionally or unconditionally accepted into a graduate program. Students who are provisionally accepted will not be eligible until they achieve conditional or unconditional acceptance into their program.

The students must have an official transcript on file indicating completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution or agency

After receiving an assistantship, the student must maintain at least a 3.0 graduate GPA in order to retain or reapply for the assistantship.

These are minimum criteria. Graduate program coordinators have the right to impose additional criteria if they see fit.
