Laboratory Manager

Full-Time; Days

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, evaluating and controlling the functions of all Laboratory services. Ensures quality care, excellent customer service, and education is provided. Collaborates with Providers, UnityPoint Health-Waterloo Laboratory staff, and contracted services to ensure that the desired standards of care are met. Ensures that all applicable Federal, State, local and accreditation standards are met and maintained.

Qualifies as a General Supervisor and Testing Personnel under the Federal Register Sec 493.1461 and Sec 493.1489.

Responsibilities
  • Direct the day-to-day functions of the department in accordance with current rules, regulations and guidelines that govern Critical Access Hospitals, including CLIA.
  • Provide leadership for the department, establish staff assignments and departmental schedules to meet organizational needs. Ensure the department is staffed with sufficient number of personnel.
  • Interview, hire and train department associates. Lead department orientation and on-boarding of new associates.
  • Conduct performance evaluations of associates. Make recommendations for merit increases and promotions. Deliver disciplinary action with support of Senior Leadership and Human Resources.
  • Provide fiscal management by developing and maintaining department operating budget in coordination with Senior Leadership. Evaluate and justify equipment and supply needs.
  • Coordinate and lead department meetings.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of the department quality assurance plan.
  • Review department policies, procedures, job descriptions, etc. and make revisions as needed.
  • Ensure that hospital personnel, patients and visitors follow the hospital/department's established policies and procedures at all times.
  • Ensure that safety and sanitation standards are maintained in all work areas.
  • Ensure that staff performs only the functions, which the person is prepared and qualified to perform.
  • Perform all job functions of laboratory technologists/technicians.
  • Display a working knowledge of equipment and trouble-shooting as needed, including the Laboratory Information System.
  • Communicate to Senior Leadership any hospital-wide concerns/complaints.
  • Employ conflict management techniques to resolve intradepartmental and interdepartmental grievances or concerns.
  • Review patient complaints and grievances. Provide service recovery as needed.
  • Develop and evaluate new services. Coordinate the evaluation, purchase and installation of new equipment.
  • Ensure the Laboratory is enrolled in an approved proficiency program for the testing performed.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological or degree in clinical laboratory science or medical technology degree from an accredited institution.
  • Qualify as Testing Personnel under Federal Register Sec 493.1489 and General Supervisor under Federal Register Sec 493.1461.
  • 3 years experience within a clinical laboratory setting in the last 10 years
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) as a Medical Lab Scientist or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain current BLS and Dependent Adult and Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter certification as outlined per policy.

Preferred:

  • Previous laboratory leadership experience within the clinical laboratory setting.
