JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Facilities Engineering Institute (PSFEI) is seeking an Electrical Field Engineer with experience in electrical power systems design, operations, and maintenance to join our team and assist with our mission to guide facility managers across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with increasing the safety, reliability, and efficiency of their facility systems. This is a term appointment funded for three years from the date of hire, with an excellent.

PSFEI is a front-facing, non-academic unit with a rich tradition of providing facility engineering services since our founding in 1947- we've proudly been serving our Commonwealth clients for over 75 years! PSFEI is part of the College of Engineering at Penn State University Park and touches the lives of thousands of people in all 67 counties of Pennsylvania and across our nation through the facility engineering, education program, facility condition assessment, and energy management advisory services that we provide. Through our success, we have grown to a workforce of over 45 engineers, specialists, programmers, and administrative staff who are located throughout the Commonwealth. We are committed to helping our clients optimize the operation of their facilities and supporting our staff in achieving a high level of satisfaction in carrying forth this mission.

Your Role at PSFEI

As an Electrical Field Engineer, you will join a team of other specialists and engineers who use their engineering design and problem-solving skills to provide clients with technical insight and services focused on power systems that are critical to the operation of their facility. The recommendations and services you provide are essential to maintaining power to mission-critical facilities across the Commonwealth.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Create, troubleshoot, modify, test, and deploy system sequences of operations, control logic programming, and protection setpoints for complex power systems protection and control schemes.

  • Perform power quality engineering studies, including voltage sag/swell, harmonic distortion, load flow, power factor correction, and fault analysis.

  • Perform power system engineering studies, including short circuit calculations, device evaluation, selective coordination, and arc flash assessments.

  • Respond to critical power system issues and emergencies and assist in system recovery by interpreting electrical fault data, utilizing fault locating testing equipment, and performing root cause analysis, system troubleshooting, and corrective repairs.

  • Perform power system testing and maintenance activities to increase system reliability

  • Provide technical research and consultation for unusual or complex power systems problems typically related to system design, equipment operations or specifications, applicable codes and standards, and utility service provider interconnections.

  • Evaluate operations of distributed generation assets and microgrids and develop solutions to optimize energy generation, asset revenue generation, and programmatic goals.

  • Develop and review engineering design documentation for power systems by creating and evaluating programmatic, budget, feasibility, and technical requirements.

  • Assist with developing educational courses and training customer base through electrical workshops, short courses, and on-site mentoring within the field of expertise.

Your position is a blend of office and fieldwork that primarily requires day travel but includes an occasional overnight stay.

Education and Experience Requirements

Senior professional level: Minimum Education, Bachelor's Degree. Minimum Experience: 6+ years of relevant experience. Advanced level: Minimum Education, Bachelor's Degree, Minimum Experience, 3+ years of relevant experience. Degrees in or related to Electrical Engineering, a professional engineering license, and 10 or more years of experience are strongly preferred.

Successful candidates in this position often have direct experience working on electrical power systems, including distribution and generation. The successful candidate will be expected to interact with a variety of audiences and exhibit excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.

This position is based at our State College, PA office adjacent to the Penn State University Park campus; however, we are supportive of flexible work arrangements, including hybrid and remote when aligned with the ability to meet the needs of our unit and the essential duties of the position. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. Security clearances may be required for access to client sites.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$86,300.00 - $145,700.00
