The National Multiple Sclerosis Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. To fulfill this mission, the Society funds cutting-edge research, drives change through advocacy, facilitates professional education, collaborates with MS organizations around the world, and provides programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. We partner with volunteers to accomplish our work. Staff members engage volunteers through effective and timely communications, facilitating meaningful opportunities, and continually seeking and providing feedback for reciprocal growth and learning.

The Vice President of Individual Giving, in partnership with the SVP, Development, leads a high-performing national team dedicated to securing transformational philanthropic support for the Society. This pivotal role is key to driving major, principal, individual, and planned gifts, as well as leading direct marketing campaigns, all aimed at advancing the Society's Strategic Plan.

The VP will develop and execute a comprehensive national strategy for individual giving to maximize donor engagement, retention, and revenue growth. The position will focus on securing six- and seven-figure gifts, managing a personal portfolio of high-net-worth donors, and guiding them through all stages of the donor lifecycle, including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

In addition to managing major gift portfolios, the VP will foster cross-departmental collaboration, working closely with senior leadership, regional teams, mission teams, marketing, technology, and finance to strengthen donor outreach and communication strategies. The VP will ensure the integration of innovative fundraising methods, including planned giving and direct marketing, to expand the donor pipeline and optimize results.

As a key member of the development team, the VP will also provide strategic guidance to senior leadership, including the Chief Development Officer and SVP, Development, advising on donor engagement strategies and facilitating their involvement in high-level donor relations. With a focus on high-impact stewardship, the VP will collaborate with donor relations to implement process-driven stewardship strategies that deepen donor loyalty and drive long-term philanthropic success for the Society.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead a high-performing individual giving team across major and principal gifts, annual fund, planned giving, and direct marketing to drive national revenue goals through a comprehensive regional strategy aligned with the Society's Strategic Plan.

  • Partner with the SVP, Development and Executive Leadership Team to create innovative funding opportunities for individuals and foundations to drive growth and sustainability.

  • Provide influential leadership within development, fostering cross-departmental collaboration with regional teams, mission teams, marketing, technology, and finance to strengthen donor outreach, optimize communication, and build the case for support.

  • Have extensive experience (10+ years) as a frontline major gifts fundraiser, and personally manage a portfolio of six- and seven-figure donors, overseeing all stages of the donor lifecycle (cultivation, solicitation, stewardship) to maximize engagement and giving potential.

  • Use data analytics to segment donors and inform strategies, staying updated on philanthropic trends to implement innovative giving methods.

  • Oversee the growth of the planned giving program in partnership with legal, major giving, and finance teams to generate revenue and expand the donor pipeline.

  • Lead a team managing 50+ annual direct marketing campaigns, leveraging outbound calling technology and targeted strategies to enhance retention and giving.

  • Collaborate with major and planned giving teams to ensure seamless portfolio management, driving donor engagement and sustainable revenue growth.

  • Advise the Chief Development Officer, SVP, Development, and senior leadership on donor strategies and facilitate their involvement in high-level donor relations.

  • Partner with donor relations to implement centralized, process-driven stewardship strategies focused on maximizing donor retention and loyalty across all areas of development.

Required qualifications

  • 10+ years of demonstrated and relevant fundraising experience (including 6 years of team leadership and supervision) with advanced understanding of prospect qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship

  • Record of leadership and accomplishment in fundraising including campaign planning and execution, pipeline development, and mid-level revenue generation across multiple markets

  • Able to assess staff talent, mentor, and train others toward a shared vision, providing strategic guidance to ensure staff meet their designated revenue and activity goals.

  • Proven ability to manage broad and technical fundraising campaigns, collaborating effectively with staff and volunteers to secure individual gifts.

  • Demonstrated success in coaching staff to higher levels of gift closure and performance and guiding leadership staff through portfolio management, holding reporting and non-reporting staff accountable to identified revenue and donor targets.

  • Experience developing and monitoring budgets and targets, and assessing and adjusting team portfolios to ensure goals are met

  • Proven nonprofit leadership experience with increasing responsibility, successfully driving 7-8 figure gifts

  • Expertise in AI, predictive analytics, and CRM tools to optimize sales pipeline automation, donor journey mapping, and forecasting donor trends to enhance retention and maximize event success

  • Extensive experience managing geographically dispersed teams, in remote and hybrid environments, overseeing both revenue generation and project execution.

  • Track record of implementing innovative fundraising strategies that drive engagement and revenue growth.

  • Strong ability to perform under pressure, handle criticism professionally, and consistently meet fundraising commitments.

  • Exceptional project management, strategic planning, and negotiation skills to drive effective resource allocation and optimize fundraising outcomes.

  • Advanced CRM expertise, leveraging data analytics to drive decision-making and train teams on data-driven fundraising strategies.

  • Field-based role requiring 30%+ travel, including events, training, regional meetings, and organizational gatherings.

Compensation & Benefits:

The estimated hiring compensation range for this role is $165,000-$200,000. Final offers will be based on the candidate'sgeographic location, consider career experience and may vary from this range due to these and other factors.
