Advance Practice Clinician

Job Description

We are seeking a uniquely qualified physician assistant to support and help expand the surgical practice of Dr. Susanna Nazarian. Dr. Nazarian seeks a PA partner for a long-term professional relationship. Dr. Nazarian is a breast surgical oncologist who has built a busy practice largely serving patients seeking gender-affirming top surgery (double mastectomies with aesthetic closure to mimic the chest of a cis gender male). Patients assigned female at birth seek top surgery due to significant gender dysphoria. Presently Dr. Nazarian's practice is approximately 85% top surgery, 15% breast surgical oncology. The practice is nearly exclusively outpatient- only breast surgical oncology patients undergoing mastectomies are admitted overnight. The PA will work with Dr. Nazarian at both the Jefferson Center City Philadelphia and Jefferson Cherry Hill, New Jersey campuses. Presently Dr. Nazarian spends about 2/3 of her time in Cherry Hill and 1/3 in Center City. This position does not include on-call responsibilities.

We seek an experienced physician assistant with two core attributes:

The physician assistant must treat all patients with respect, empathy and patience. For top surgery patients, the proper pronouns and preferred name must be used at all times. The PA will interact with this gender diverse (transgender and nonbinary patients assigned female at birth) extensively throughout their initial visit, preoperative visit, day of surgery, postoperative visits and the frequent phone calls and Epic messages. The PA must treat this unique population with grace, warmth and understanding. The physician assistant must possess strong technical surgical skills. Dr. Nazarian is fully responsible for surgical planning and guiding the operation. The PA will work in partnership with Dr. Nazarian to complete the top surgery operation. We work hard to achieve the best aesthetic outcome for each patient. In breast surgical oncology cases, the PA will support Dr. Nazarian in completing the operation.

Assessment & Management

  • The PA will handle perioperative care including but not limited to independent preoperative and postoperative clinic hours, triaging patient concerns, rounding on inpatients when applicable and the managing patients presenting to the Emergency Department when applicable.

Practice Management

  • The PA will call patients the day before surgery to provide preoperative instructions and to provide reassurance.
  • The PA will order postoperative medications in advance for all patients.
  • The PA will complete postoperative phone calls on postoperative day one.
  • The PA will review the upcoming operative schedule to optimize efficiencies, with an eye to order of surgeries and needs of other surgeons with the breast team. The PA will interface with the operating room leadership when needed to effect changes in the schedule.

Communication and Collaboration

  • The PA will work collaboratively with our outstanding team, and possess a can-do, problem-solving attitude. We are so fortunate to work with highly intelligent, empathetic, and committed nurse practitioners, physician assistant, patient service representatives, medical assistants and physicians. The PA will be a trusted member of our team.

Documentation

  • The PA will document clinic notes, telephone calls and discharge summaries in a timely fashion. The PA will complete postoperative discharge paperwork.

Professional Practice

  • The PA may interact with trainees, including surgical residents and physician assistant students. The PA will be generous in educating where appropriate and assist surgical residents in surgery under the supervision of Dr. Nazarian.
  • The PA will serve as a trusted resource for other members of the breast team and the operating room staff.
  • The PA will maintain CEUs and membership in a professional organization.
