Job Description:
Lead a team of material handlers responsible for managing all the materials life cycle- inventory and receipt of parts-including HAZMAT Class 1 explosives-across our Grayling, Michigan location. Oversee compliance with all federal, state, and local safety regulations, including Department of Transportation (DOT), ATF, and OSHA standards. Utilize Oracle ERP to manage materials life cycle including inventory, receiving, and shipping, ensuring secure handling, storage, and transportation of hazardous and non-hazardous materials. Responsibilities:
- Member of the Supply Chain Management team, reporting to Land Systems Supply Chain Management
- Lead the receipt, storage, movement, and shipment of HAZMAT Class 1 explosives, following all applicable regulations, including DoD, DOT, ATF, and NFPA 495 guidelines.
- Develop and enforce strict safety and security protocols for the handling and storage of explosive materials.
- Maintain compliance with HAZMAT training certifications for self and team members; ensure training is current and documented.
- Lead logistics, shipping/receiving, warehousing, and deployment operations with an emphasis on hazardous material safety and documentation.
- Ensure materials are received from authorized suppliers, delivered accurately to inventory, and packaged, labeled, and shipped per regulatory and customer requirements.
- Ensure inventory accuracy and security, especially for sensitive or hazardous materials, via ERP (Oracle) systems.
- Conduct and document periodic HAZMAT-specific audits and inspections (e.g., fire marshal, internal, ATF).
- Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS) and ensure proper hazard communication throughout the supply chain.
- Lead daily safety talks, stretching and work conditioning, and equipment safety checks-with a focus on explosive material handling.
- Partner with EHS and compliance teams to drive continuous improvement in hazardous materials management.
- Establish and refine standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the secure handling, packaging, and transportation of Class 1 materials.
- Support property control, internal audits, and federal inspections related to HAZMAT and explosive materials.
Compensation Range: $79,000 - $98,000 The compensation range provided is a general guideline. When extending an offer, Saab, Inc. considers factors including (but not limited to) the role and associated responsibilities, location, and market and business considerations, as well as the candidate's work experience, key skills, and education/training.
Skills and Experience:
- 8+ years of relevant experience in defense manufacturing, inventory control, procurement, and hazardous materials management.
- Prior experience with Class 1 explosives or other regulated hazardous materials required.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Industrial Safety, or related field is preferred.
- HAZMAT certification (DOT 49 CFR), explosives safety training, and/or ATF compliance knowledge highly desirable.
- Experience with ISO/AS9100 quality systems; familiarity with NFPA, ATF, DOT, and OSHA requirements.
- Skilled in ERP/MRP systems (Oracle preferred) for tracking HAZMAT and non-HAZMAT inventory.
- Proven ability to lead teams with a strong safety culture in regulated environments.
- Excellent communication, training, organizational, and documentation skills.
- Able to obtain and maintain security clearance and HAZMAT endorsements as required.
- Demonstrated experience managing hazardous/explosive materials in a defense or aerospace setting.
- Strong understanding of HAZMAT classifications, labeling, segregation, and storage requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Ability to interpret and apply federal regulations and industry standards.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accountability in a high-stakes, regulated environment.
- Demonstrates management skills to lead a team of material handlers.
