The Adams School of Dentistry is one of six health science schools (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, Public Health) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the first dental school in the state of North Carolina. The ASOD consists of seven (7) Academic Departments: Biomedical Sciences, Craniofacial and Surgical Care (Craniofacial Center, Geriatrics/Special Care, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Oral Medicine), Restorative Sciences (General Dentistry, Operative & Biomaterials and Prosthodontics), Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health, Orthodontics, Diagnostic Sciences (Oral Microbiology, Orofacial Pain/Sleep, Pathology and Radiology) and Periodontology, Endodontics and Dental Hygiene (one department). Currently the ASOD has 1,077 incumbents, filling 589 faculty positions (412 non-paid adjunct status, 177 in-pay status), 83 fellow positions, 33 post-doc positions, 42 EHRA-NF positions, 283 SHRA positions and 47 SHRA student positions, and we have active recruitments for faculty and staff! Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Division of Comprehensive Oral Health houses several disciplines including, Periodontology, Dental Hygiene, Comprehensive Dentistry, Operative Dentistry/BioMaterials, Prosthodontics, and Endodontics. The Periodontology discipline focuses on the prevention and treatment of gum disease, as well as the management of gum and tissue inflammation resulting from existing dental conditions
Position Summary
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $3,000 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT FOR THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE.
$1,500 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE AND
$1,500 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.


The Patient Care Coordinator has five primary responsibilities:
- the monitoring and coordination of patient care provided in the Periodontology Graduate dental clinic to assure efficient delivery of high quality patient-centered-care
- tracking the performance of residents to ensure that residents provide excellent patient management and that residents are receiving the appropriate educational experiences and are progressing towards competence and graduation
- participate in and help coordinate the delivery, development and continuous improvement of the periodontology program
- participate in the risk management process by acting as compliance officer and as an ombudsman/ombudswoman in the clinic
- supervision of others
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Licensed to practice as a Dental Hygienist in the State of North Carolina.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, in executing responsibilities and dealing with patients, residents, faculty, and staff are needed as well as the ability to work with diverse people and groups.

Ability to insure and monitor the clinical skills progress of residents through appropriate referrals and feedback. Ability to track resident progress, assignments and experiences using appropriate software. Ability to use electronic patient record systems and generate reports. Excellent attention to timeliness, detail and accuracy in records is a critical skill.

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and regulations governing clinical dental hygiene and treatment of periodontal patients, including best clinical practices, patient care protocols, medical and dental guidelines. Considerable knowledge of proper patient care management and administrative standards as it pertains to Periodontology.

Ability to perform specialized patient services consistent with the Dental Hygiene Practice Act in the Periodontology specialty and with high risk patients. Ability to assist residents in correctly assessing a problem or in completing the solution. Ability to supervise residents and/or staff. Ability to advise on and help evaluate procedures performed in the clinic. Ability to educate the patient in proper oral hygiene and alternative treatment methods to aid in periodontal disease management. Ability to continue self-education of both new and innovative treatment procedures for periodontal disease. Ability to collect and record patient data and to make decisions on resident case assignment of referrals.

The position requires the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, to negotiate and achieve successful results, and to thrive in a fast-paced environment while delivering high-level customer service.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Dental hygiene experience preferably in Periodontology. Experience in an administrative role is desirable.

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS
The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including without limitation the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.
A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
This SHRA Sign-on Bonus is contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire. All recipients must sign the Pay Back Agreement form.
