Job Summary: The senior process safety engineer will be a key member of the operations support process safety team to provide comprehensive technical process safety support to ensure safe operation for all asset types in Messer North America, such as, but not limited to: LH2, Helium, ASU, CO2, On-sites, H2 filling. The senior process safety engineer will use a set of tools and methodologies to ensure compliance with Messer process safety criteria and policies. Why Messer? Principal Responsibilities: * Regularly engage operating teams to influence a strong process safety culture, mindset, and ownership of process safety systems. * Provide technical expertise and guidance on process safety related matters to operations and project execution as it relates to existing operating facilities and new facilities being designed and built. * Lead and/or facilitate Process Hazard Analysis (HAZOP) Studies for projects and operating facilities to identify hazards, ensure adequate safeguards exist and recommend additional safeguards as required. * Lead or participate in root cause analysis and accident investigations for incidents. * Provide process safety consulting and support to support plant management of change (MOC) and pre-start up safety reviews (PSSR) to ensure good engineering design and compliance with Messer standards and policies. * Conduct specialized risk and consequence assessments including vent and dispersion analysis. * Be a lead Auditor for Operational & Engineering (O&E) audits to ensure compliance to Messer policies and procedures. * Deliver training on process safety topics such as but not limited to PHA, MOC, PSSR, Risk Assessment, safe operating practices, major site hazards, process safety in design, oxygen safety, cleaning and compatibility. * Identify and implement continuous improvement efforts to drive process safety performance. Required Skills: * Ability to recognize hazards, drive-continuous improvement and promote practical alternatives for risk reduction and risk control measures. * Understand and apply qualitative and quantitative process safety risk evaluation methods to various scenarios and processes. These include but are not limited to Process Hazard Analysis Techniques such as HAZOP, and Semi-quantitative risk assessment tools such as LOPA. Experience with quantitative risk assessment tools such as fault tree analysis would be beneficial. * Experience with consequence modeling (e.g. PHAST) is a plus. * Good Leadership skills, good engineering problem-solving skills, good interpersonal and communication skills. * Experience in process engineering, and a basic understanding of flowsheets (P&ID's), safety relief demand scenarios, and basic functions of unit operations. * Experience with instrumentation, process controls, machinery and electrical design is beneficial. Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering preferred, similar degrees acceptable based on experience * Minimum of 5 to 10 years of operations or engineering experience in a technical support or design role with industrial gas experience (e.g. air separation, carbon dioxide, hydrogen) and/or refining/chemical processes. * Ability to travel up to 25% of the time About Messer: Messer's safety culture, commitment to providing dependable supply and innovative gas technology solutions help customers unlock opportunities to be safer, more sustainable, more productive and more efficient, so their business thrives.
