POSITION SPECIFICS

A Research Technologist position is available in the Fox Lab in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the Penn State College of Medicine, in Hershey, PA. This position offers the opportunity to be part of a pre-clinical research team focused on studying the molecular mechanisms underlying opioid use and stress disorders.

The primary duties and responsibilities include routine mouse husbandry and colony management, ordering lab supplies, performing experiments, and recording data. The position requires extensive mouse handling and involves collecting tissue samples. Previous animal handling experience is required.

The candidate should be comfortable working with rodents, familiar with standard biological laboratory research techniques (e.g. PCR, gel electrophoresis), and motivated to learn new techniques and approaches.

The successful candidate will be detail oriented with excellent time management and fine motor skills, and the ability to follow instructions and work
independently.

The Technologist will be expected to work with graduate students/postdocs and contribute to studies assessing the effects of misused substances and/or social stress on behavior and brain reward circuits.

It is preferred that the candidate will have a bachelor's degree in biology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, or a related field, with some prior research experience. Some experience with rudimentary data management is essential. A high level of technical aptitude is preferred, as most projects require extensive use of computers, data management software, and electronic devices. Research Technologist - Animal Sciences perform specialized tasks associated with developing, designing, and conducting research projects and experiments under the general direction of faculty and post-docs. Tasks involve working with animals confined in conventional, barrier, quarantine, and specialized biohazard housing; may require handling of acute, chronic, and infections diseases, quarantine procedures, and radioisotopes.

  • Contribute to, design, develop, conduct, and manage research projects under the general direction of faculty and post-docs; participate in formulating research methods; assist in determining goal and objective feasibility; recommend improvements
  • Perform complex in vivo and in vitro procedures, experiments, and tests; harvest/collect fluids, tissues, organs, and other substances; conduct assays, microscopic, and other analyses such as hematological, microbiological, immunological, histopathological, etc.
  • Culture, isolate, and identify bacteria; identify parasites and other microorganisms and perform additional specialized testing as requested
  • Following research plans and protocols; compile, correlate, and verify data collected; identify integrity issues; interpret and report results
  • Review, contribute to, prepare, author/co-author manuscripts, technical reports, papers, proposals, and presentations
  • May manage multiple or large projects including planning, scheduling, conducting, or coordinating detailed phases of the work; serve as expert individual contributor or lead researcher; coordinate administrative, financial, personnel, and planning; monitor expenditures
  • Act as liaison with other departments, divisions, or organizations to answer questions or provide advice on research projects and experiments; coordinate research and develop activities between disciplines
  • Participate in committee meetings; create/ revise SOP's, policies, guidelines, training, and course material; conduct training
  • Follow IACUC, IRB, DEA, USDA and other research and regulatory guidelines, procedures, and protocols
  • May supervise staff, including hiring and performance management

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree 1+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $38,300.00 - $55,500.00.
