Full Range: $55,000 - $83,250 annually

Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

About the Position

The Internal Auditor I will provide objective information on the County's system of internal controls to the Board of Supervisors so they can make informed decisions and protect the interests of County citizens. We'll count on you to perform engagement fieldwork such as conducting interviews/tests, gathering information/evidence, and reviewing financial statements/reports. Your role is essential as you'll determine whether the County's financial and accounting systems, departmental operations, programs, and contracts are compliant with federal and state laws, grant requirements, and County policies.

We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, or a related field
    • Undergrads must have their degree before employment start date
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

We Also Value

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), or other professional certification relevant to internal auditing
  • Knowledge of:
    • Generally accepted accounting principles and auditing standards, and the IIA's International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing
    • COSO, fraud investigation procedures, and technical audit tools
    • Research techniques, including interviews, sampling, literature reviews, and quantitative and qualitative analysis
    • Audit management software and commonly used Microsoft products

Job Contributions

Under the supervision of an Audit Supervisor:

  • Conducts audits of the County's financial and accounting systems, departmental operations, programs, and contracts
  • Performs research and risk assessments to determine operational and financial areas to audit
  • Performs audit fieldwork consisting of conducting interviews, gathering information and evidence, conducting tests, and reviewing financial statements and reports
  • Determines compliance with federal and state laws, grant requirements, and County policies
  • Evaluates internal and management controls
  • Analyzes processes and work methods and prepares a report on findings
  • Prepares audit documentation, memoranda, and other correspondence
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office environment, and teleworking from home
  • Travel may be required in and around Maricopa County (not out of state)
