Job Description

Primary Purpose


Performs and supervises accounting related to numerous critical accounting areas. Keeps management informed of new and emerging authoritative accounting policies and regulations and assesses their financial statement impact.



Principal Duties



  • Analyzes and interprets complicated financial transactions.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and is responsible for the accounting for legal matters, personal injury claims, environmental liabilities, corporate-owned life insurance, and pension and other postretirement benefits. This includes review and analysis of the work of external experts. Oversees employee benefit accounting including stock-based compensation, bonus and other incentives.
  • Ensures that financial transactions are recorded in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Coordinates with internal and external audit staff for consolidated financial statement audits and employee benefit plan audits.
  • Reviews and oversees the work of two staff (one direct, one indirect). Oversees the preparation of journal entries and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Reviews and analyzes new Accounting Standards Updates for guidance applicable to Norfolk Southern and performs accounting research on transactions.
  • Supervises the preparation of various internal and external reports for presentation to management, the Board of Directors, and other stakeholders, including the preparation of footnotes for the 10-Q & 10-K.
  • Supervises the preparation of annual employee benefit plan financial statements and coordination of the annual audits of those plans, including 11-K with the SEC and 5500 with DOL.
  • Provides guidance to other departments with accounting related matters.
  • Develops and motivates staff, including conducting annual and semi-annual performance reviews.



Qualifications & Skills


Education/Certifications:



  • Minimum Level: Bachelor's Degree (BBA/BS)
  • Preferred Major: Accounting, Finance
  • Required: CPA



Experience



  • Minimum Level: 3-5 years
  • Preferred Level: 6-10 years
