Outpatient Insurance Specialist - Full Time - Day Shift - Detroit

GENERAL SUMMARY:



  • Under general supervision, identifies and determines in accordance with established policies and procedures the accuracy and completeness of financial, insurance and/or demographic information for patients receiving medical care at HFHS and subsidiaries.
  • Verifies insurance eligibility and benefit information with insurance plans to determine patient's financial responsibility related to deductibles, co-pay and out of pocket expenses.
  • Confirms all insurance requirements are met, including but not limited to; referrals and authorizations.
  • Investigates and reviews the accuracy and completeness of information to ensure account is secure.
  • Counsel, collect and make financial arrangements for patients with self-pay responsibility.
  • Resolve problem accounts to determine primary insurance and/or coordination of benefits.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:



  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • College coursework in accounting, business, computers or health care administration is preferred.
  • One-year as customer service or other related role with HFHS is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of various insurance plans, COB rules of priority and processing procedures, preferred.
  • Basic typing knowledge and computer skills required to operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to operate a variety of other office equipment including calculator, fax machine and photo copier.
  • Ability to adjust to new technologies as introduced.
  • Basic Excel and word processing experience required.
  • Organizational and time management skills required in order to maintain and prioritize daily work, weekly reports and to follow-up on accounts in a timely manner.
  • Analytical skills required to determine COB requirements.
  • Verbal and written communication skills required in order to effectively obtain required information from patients, insurance companies, physicians, patient advocates and internal and external agencies.
  • Demonstrate team-oriented capabilities, along with a willingness to assist fellow employees within the HFHS and subsidiaries.
  • Must meet and maintain HFHS policies and procedures and departmental standards.
