The Position

As the Principal Manager of Internal Communications, for Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED), you will be the strategic architect and driving force behind communications that elevate and enable gRED's bold scientific vision-with a primary focus on the Computation Center of Excellence (CoE). In this highly visible and influential role, you will partner closely with senior executives and cross-functional leaders to shape internal engagement and storytelling that drives cultural alignment, organizational clarity, and scientific momentum.

As a senior member of the gRED Communications team, you will operate as a trusted advisor to gRED and Computation CoE leadership, translating complex scientific, technical, and strategic priorities into clear, compelling communication that resonates across a diverse internal audience. You will lead the development of forward-thinking communications strategies that position the Computation CoE as a cornerstone of gRED's innovation engine, while supporting broader gRED and Roche enterprise-wide alignment.

This role reports to the Senior Director, Head of Internal Communications for Genentech Research and Early Development.

The Opportunity

  • Lead internal communications strategy and execution for the Computation CoE, shaping the vision, goals, and identity of this strategic function across gRED and the broader organization.

  • Serve as a senior-level communications partner to CoE leadership, providing high-impact counsel on positioning, messaging, change communications, and strategic initiatives.

  • Champion a science-first, people-powered storytelling approach, translating computational and technical concepts into engaging narratives that connect to gRED's purpose and culture.

  • Drive integrated, multi-channel communications campaigns that highlight CoE innovations, milestones, and cross-functional collaborations-amplifying their value across the organization.

  • Collaborate with the gRED Comms leadership team to support enterprise-wide strategic communications, executive messaging, and cultural engagement.

  • Engage at the enterprise level, partnering with communications counterparts across Genentech and Roche to align internal and external messaging and strategic priorities globally.

  • Define success metrics, evaluate performance, and continuously optimize communications efforts to ensure measurable business impact.

  • Proactively identify and capitalize on emerging trends, innovative formats, and new platforms to elevate the employee experience and strengthen organizational cohesion.

Who you are

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in communications, science, or a related field is a plus.

  • 10-15 years of progressive experience in internal or corporate communications, with at least 5 years in a senior or strategic leadership role.

  • Deep experience engaging directly with executive leadership; demonstrated ability to operate with autonomy and strategic foresight.

  • Exceptional storytelling, messaging, and writing skills-especially in translating scientific/technical information into accessible, meaningful content.

  • Expertise in communications strategy development, organizational engagement, and cross-functional influence within complex matrix environments.

  • Track record of leading change communications and transformation initiatives, preferably in science, technology, healthcare, or R&D settings.

Preferred qualifications

Background in biotech, pharma, or high-tech innovation environments-especially those rooted in research, data science, or digital transformation.

  • Familiarity with computational biology, machine learning, or data-driven R&D is highly desirable.

  • Prior consulting experience or time spent in a global, networked organization is a strong plus.

  • Experience with executive communications, employee experience, and internal brand activation preferred.

Relocation benefits are not available for this position.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $167,300 - $317,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
