Accounting Manager, Property Management

As an Accounting Manager on our client finance team, you will lead the property accounting function, providing comprehensive financial oversight and strategic support to the property management team. You will function as a key leader within the management team, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting for a portfolio of properties.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Lead and Oversee Financial Operations: Direct and manage all month-end and year-end close activities, including comprehensive balance sheet and cash account reconciliations, general ledger management, and financial statement preparation and review. Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting Leadership: Lead the creation, review, and consolidation of annual budgets and monthly financial forecasts across the property portfolio.
  • Strategic Reporting and Analysis: Prepare, review, and present sophisticated monthly reporting packages for senior management and clients, detailing financial performance relative to plan, identifying key trends, and providing actionable insights.
  • Client and Property Team Partnership: Act as the primary financial liaison and strategic partner to Property Managers and clients, guiding them through monthly property financials, addressing complex accounting inquiries, and fostering strong collaborative relationships.
  • Performance Monitoring and Variance Analysis: Develop, produce, and critically analyze variance reports and key performance metrics for business operations management teams, offering strategic recommendations for operational improvements.
  • Cash Management and Reconciliation Oversight: Oversee and approve all bank statement reconciliations on a timely basis, ensuring resolution of all outstanding checks and reconciling items.
  • Financial Review and True-Up: Manage and review the reconciliation and true-up of funding versus actual expenditures, ensuring financial accuracy and compliance.
  • Accrual Management: Direct the preparation and review of monthly accruals for client accounting services.
  • Financial Analysis and Review: Perform and review in-depth financial analyses detailing assets, liabilities, and capital, identifying potential risks and opportunities.
  • Lease Compliance and Escalations: Oversee the preparation of operating escalations, year-end true-ups, and real estate taxes in strict adherence to lease requirements, ensuring compliance and accuracy.
  • Internal Controls and Compliance: Ensure rigorous compliance with both internal audit standards (e.g., Jones Lang LaSalle Internal Audit and Client Accounting Services SAS 70 internal review standards, or equivalent) and all relevant accounting principles and regulations.
  • Advanced Financial Analysis: Lead and conduct complex financial analyses, including Cost-Benefit Analysis and other sophisticated analytical projects, to support strategic decision-making.
  • Communication and Presentation: Communicate financial and operational performance results effectively to client's leadership team and business partners, leading formal recommendations and presentations.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Function as a key resource and mentor to property accounting teams, coordinating procedures, providing guidance on complex accounting matters, and fostering professional growth within the team.
  • Process Improvement and Efficiency: Proactively identify opportunities for process improvement and drive the implementation of efficiencies within the accounting and financial reporting functions, partnering closely with clients and property teams.
  • Special Projects: Lead and manage special accounting and finance projects as needed, often involving cross-functional teams.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • Experience: 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory or managerial role within a property management or real estate environment
  • Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of real estate accounting principles, property management operations, and lease accounting
  • Analytical Acumen: Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills with a proven ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights
  • Leadership and Management: Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team of accounting professionals. Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of effectively interacting with all levels of staff, senior management, and external clients
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced computer proficiency, particularly with Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, advanced formulas). Extensive experience with property management accounting software (e.g., Yardi Voyager, MRI, RealPage) is required; Yardi experience is a significant plus
  • Ethical Standards: Demonstrated consistency in values, principles, and work ethic, upholding the highest standards of integrity
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in all financial outputs
