This position will serve as the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) Principal Investigator/Coordinator and Research Scientist at the Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene (WSLH) /University of Wisconsin Madison. Primarily, this position will be responsible for coordinating and leading efforts to advance the programmatic goals and network operations of NADP. He/She will lead and provide scientific support for existing NADP networks and will be involved with coordination and integration of NADP networks, partnerships and collaborations. This position will be responsible for NADP reporting, budgetary control, and provide support for the NADP annual NADP meetings. This position will work with multiple NADP Committees, including the Executive Committee, and the NADP program staff at UW-Madison to advance NADP and its partnerships.

Secondarily, this position will have a leading role within the WSLH to establish and direct a research program into some aspect of atmospheric sciences and air quality/public health that furthers the mission of the WSLH and the University of Wisconsin. This person will be expected to set research goals for the position, further this science through original research and publication, obtain funding to carry out this research, and collaborate across NADP and WSLH with other researchers. This position will come with an appropriate academic department appointment (Atmospheric Sciences, Env. Engineering, Chemistry, Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, etc.). The goal is to establish new partnerships that further utilization of NADP data, and expand the application of NADP information to new fields of applied science leading to increased understanding of atmospheric deposition and its impact on the environment and public health. In order to fulfill the WSLH academic mission, this position could also include the ability to teach one to two environmental science and/or environmental engineering courses per year at UW- Madison.

The employee in this position is expected to use the tools and principles of quality management in performing their daily work including the following: Demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with other managers, supervisors, coworkers, and all customers and colleagues. Provide constructive feedback for the purpose of continuous improvement in a manner that is supportive of the State Laboratory of Hygiene and its mission. Use effective team skills to contribute to the effective operation of the unit. Present ideas, carry out assignments, and provide information as required. Participate in continuous learning through professional development activities.

Principle Duties:
As NADP Program Coordinator, this position is expected to maintain a strong working knowledge of and provide leadership for the administrative and support functions of the NADP, including communications with and reporting to federal and state/tribal partners. This position must work closely with lab staff and leadership in the NADP Analytical Lab (NAL) to ensure the smooth and efficient dissemination of information, and operations of the Program Office.

1) 50% Programmatic Responsibilities and Outreach

Work closely with WSLH and NADP staff and leadership to continually analyze trends and understand ways to disseminate and improve data utilization. Establish and maintain new and expanded scientific relationships to further the intellectual use of program data. Conduct and support key communications and meetings within NADP. Present key NADP metrics to national and regional leadership committees. Ensure production of the annual report, other applicable reports when required, key graphics and maps, and conference/meeting presentations. Track and communicate with appropriate staff and colleagues any issues/concerns regarding monitoring sites that may be in jeopardy, addition of new sites, and those with operational problems. Pursue and establish research collaborations with UW Madison/System, Federal and State agencies, NPO's, and other applicable groups to further the utility and awareness of NADP. Foster connections to expand NADP capabilities and its role in atmospheric deposition science and its relationship to environmental and public health.

2) 50% Academic Endeavors

This scientist will be expected to develop and lead research projects focused on atmospheric science, including areas such as depositional research, geochemistry of atmospheric pollutants, public health/environmental impacts of the same, and future directions of depositional monitoring and research science, etc. Writing grant proposals to secure funding for research activities from various state and federal agencies, with appropriate publishing of research findings in reputable scientific journals and presenting at conferences. The expectation is that the research goals will further collaborations with other researchers within the WSLH, and NADP, UW Madison, and others in the atmospheric community.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Serves as a unit subject matter expert and liaison to internal and external stakeholders providing advanced level information and representing the interests of a specialized research area - 5%
  • Identifies research problems and develops complex research methodologies and procedures - 20%
  • Serve as WSLH National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) as Principal Investigator (PI) and Program Coordinator - 20%
  • Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding - 10%
  • Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information - 10%
  • Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities - 10%
  • Monitors program budget and approves unit expenditures - 5%
  • Collects and analyzes complex research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision - 20%

Compensation:

Minimum salary is $85,000/year. Actual salary to be determined upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Atmospheric deposition-related research focus

- Laboratory experience

- Project management experience (budget, personnel, etc.)

- Strong mathematical and chemical quantitative skills

- Statistical, and programming skills

- Strong Communication Skills for conveying research findings and weather information

- The ability to conduct independent studies and collaborate with other scientists

Education:

PhD in Environmental Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Geochemistry or Engineering.
