Overview

Provides training and education to partners and providers throughout the organization in CDI (Clinical Documentation Integrity) documentation, query creation, clinical criteria, DRG assignment, Coding, HCC and risk adjustment. Schedules, develops and conducts educational sessions in one-on-one, group, in person and virtual settings. Performs documentation and query identification related audits to identify quality improvement opportunities. Serves as a mentor and on-boarding specialist for the CDI team. Supports and enhances education efforts by utilizing reporting and conducting data analysis. Conducts clinical validation denial analysis to identify trends and provides needed follow-up education. Utilizing clinical and coding knowledge, performs clinical documentation reviews to ensure appropriate reflection of the services and level of care provided, including compliance and completeness of clinical documentation. Utilizes critical thinking skills to successfully accomplish all educator and CDI Specialist related tasks.


Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Takes the lead and serves as the system-wide resource to identify CDI and coding related education needs, create appropriate content, coordinate scheduling of training sessions, present to in-person and virtual groups and individuals and provide appropriate and timely follow-up to all questions and concerns.
  • Trains, supports and mentors CDI team to assist with education and orientation efforts, creating content and conducting training sessions. Assists with onboarding of new CDI partners and ongoing education efforts for current partners.
  • Organizes speakers from different areas within the organization to educate CDI and Coding partners to further enhance knowledge and skills of the team.
  • Collaborates with partners, providers/residents, physician advisor, Coding, Case Management, Population Health, Nursing, Quality and ancillary departments from throughout the system to identify, coordinate process improvement initiatives and provide training related to documentation, coding, quality and length of stay opportunities.
  • Collaborates with DTS, HIM, Physician Advisor and any others needed to address and improve documentation practices within Epic or other documentation tools.
  • Performs documentation and query identification related audits to identify quality improvement opportunities. Serves as a mentor and on-boarding specialist for the CDI team.
  • Conducts clinical validation and DRG change denial account analysis to identify trends with payors, provider documentation and/or Coding and CDI workflow to determine need for partner or provider education.
  • Utilizes a high level of written and verbal communication skills, critical thinking skills, clinical and coding knowledge to successfully accomplish all aspects of the educator role.
  • Utilizes all available educator, CDI and Coding related professional organizations and resources to identify and teach to best practices, appropriate clinical criteria and ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding guidelines, and to maintain a high competence level in CDI and Coding fields.
  • Completes all responsibilities included in an RN CDI Specialist 3 job role to: complete initial and follow-up documentation reviews within established productivity guidelines; maintain inpatient and ambulatory clinical criteria knowledge and coding skills; identify system-wide documentation and coding related trends and educational needs.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Graduate of an accredited nursing program.

BSN required. Masters degree in nursing or other related field preferred.

Seven years of progressive nursing experience

A minimum of 7 years' experience in a combination of hospital based and/or ambulatory CDI.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Current IL RN licensure by the IL Dept of Professional Regulation (IDPR) or WI RN licensure by the WI Dept of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS).

Two of the following certifications required, to include 1 IP CDI focus, 1 Ambulatory CDI focus and/or 1 Coding or Educator focused certification: Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS), CCDS-O (Outpatient), Certified Documentation Improvement Professional (CDIP), Certified Documentation Expert Outpatient (CDEO), approved educator certificate/certification.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Passing the Driver's License Check and/or Credit Check (for those positions requiring).

Passing the WI Caregiver Background Check and/or IL Health Care Workers Background Check.

Must be able to follow written/oral instructions.
