Program Overview

Our Diesel Mechanic Apprentice Program is designed to:

  • Train and develop apprentices into skilled, independent heavy-duty diesel mechanics

  • Address technician shortages and improve talent retention

  • Create a career path for advancement into senior technician and shop foreman roles

Compensation & Benefits
  • Hourly Pay: $30-$40

  • Bonuses: $2,000 sign-on tool bonus + additional tool bonuses tied to rotation assessments

Program Structure
  • Duration: 12-24 months (flexible, based on experience)

  • Target Candidates: Internal employees changing roles, entry-level mechanics/lube technicians, or trade school graduates

  • Format:

    • Rotational model across 13 core technical disciplines

    • Blended learning approach: on-the-job training, online modules, and OEM courses

    • Mentorship-led: Guided by Master Mechanics, Program Sponsor, and Administrator

    • Assessment-based: Scorecards and milestone reviews determine progression

  • Travel Requirement: Apprentices rotate through multiple shop locations across Southern California, potentially spending 3-4 months at each. This offers exposure to a range of heavy equipment and shop environments. Tool bonuses are awarded upon successful completion of each rotation and assessment.

Learning & Development

This is a competency-based program that can take anywhere from 12 - 24 months to complete. Apprentices graduate upon completion of:

  • All required competencies (tracked via a Competency List)

  • Mentorship: Daily guidance from experienced mechanics

  • Internal Training: Hands-on instruction from shop experts

  • Manufacturer Courses: OEM training opportunities when available

  • Quarterly Reviews: Performance check-ins with leadership

Key Responsibilities
  • Safety Leadership: Prioritize safety for yourself and others in accordance with MSHA, CalOSHA and company standards

  • Actively engage in the the training process

  • Equipment Maintenance: Inspect, repair, and maintain mobile equipment to ensure uptime and performance

  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose mechanical issues and perform necessary repairs

  • Tool Handling: Safely move and use materials, tools, and equipment in the shop and plant

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate daily and monthly service reports (written or electronic)

  • Physical Work: Perform duties requiring strength, mobility, balance, and endurance in various outdoor weather conditions

Program Goals:

The goal of this program is to create skilled, independent diesel mechanics capable of working on heavy equipment at a plant.

  • Train and develop apprentices into competent, self-reliant heavy-duty diesel mechanics

  • Address technician shortages and improve talent retention

  • Create a career path for advancement into senior technician and shop foreman roles

Qualifications

Skills You'll Need:

Experience. Hands-on experience with diesel or heavy construction equipment preferred; vocational training a plus

Knowledge of Best Practices. Understanding of heavy equipment servicing and mechanical principles

Flexibility. Must be willing to work overtime and extended hours depending on customer and company demands. Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions and tolerate being exposed to loud noises.

Mechanical Skills. Familiarity with tools, maintenance practices, and repair procedures

Adaptability: Ability to work overtime, outdoors, and in noisy environments when needed

Salary Range. The base hourly range for this role is between $32.00 - $41.00 per hour. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidate's compensation, we consider a number of factors, including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data.
