Overview

D341 Welding Engineering has expanded and requires a dedicated supervisor to oversee direct reports within the Robotic Welding Engineering Construction Support group, based out of the Quonset Point facility. The Robotic Welding Engineering Supervisor will also be responsible for providing technical assistance and guidance to other Electric Boat sites.

The Robotic Welding Engineering Construction Support group is primarily responsible for the following:

    Retaining technical ownership of robotic welding installations and applicable written processes
  • Programming robots to allow for industrial robotic welding in a fully operational production environment
  • Working directly with operations to ensure efficient operation of robotic welding installations
  • Supporting robotic welding installation upgrades with external vendors to allow Electric Boat to have the advantage in structural submarine fabrication
  • Conduct on-job structural welding surveillances to ensure procedural compliance in robotic work centers
  • Providing technical guidance for the application of all major welding processes (GMAW, SMAW, SAW, TSAW, and GTAW)
  • Writing technical dispositions in support of development activities, Welding Engineering instructions, and external customer submittals
  • Maintaining procedural and specification compliance oversight for submarine structural documents (NAVSEA specifications, Electric Boat standard procedures, and design drawings)
  • Performing root cause analyses and evaluating problem resolution strategies for a wide variety of issues as required
  • Coordinating with peer engineering organizations to provide immediate support functional area leads in operations
  • Coordinating with functional area leads to identify opportunities for process improvement
  • Supporting upper management performance tracking goals by maintaining D341 cognizant data inputs and reports
  • Developing and maintaining company standards, procedures and best practices in the areas of robotic welding
  • Identifying resources, planning and assigning work, tracking progress and ensuring timely completion of work and projects within budgeted hours
  • Providing training and developing direct report employees' critical skills to meet department short and long term objectives
  • Contributing to annual self-assessments of Electric Boat's overall welding program and local welding engineering performance

The successful candidates will report directly to the Manager of Welding Engineering.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelors of Science degree or higher in Engineering
  • Minimum of four (4) years of Robotic or Welding engineering experience within commercial industry or at Electric Boat

Preferred:

  • Bachelors of Science degree or higher in Welding Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering
  • Advanced degree in Engineering
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of Robotic or Welding engineering experience within commercial industry or Welding or Robotic Engineering experience at Electric Boat
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Professional background in Quality Assurance
  • Experience in an industrial environment, shipbuilding, or other heavy fabrication


Skills

  • Familiarity with fabrication requirements of NAVSEA Technical Publication S9074-AR-GIB-010/278 andT9074-AD-GIB-010/1688 as well as qualification of welding procedures and welders to NAVSEA Technical Publication S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 is highly desired. Alternatively, experience with equivalent commercial (i.e. AWS/ASME) fabrication and qualification specifications is acceptable
  • Familiar with RobotStudio Suite
  • Familiar with RAPID program coding language
  • Strong understanding of programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  • Candidate must possess strong mentoring and team building skills
  • Candidate must possess ability to develop critical skills within a team
  • Candidate must be able to exercise proper judgement to decide between competing courses of action
  • Ability to motivate, direct, and understand others in order to effectively manage direct reports
  • Ability to effectively manage priorities and plan work to support customer needs
  • Ability to support internal and external customer needs
  • Ability to effectively communicate with direct reports, Manager, and Director-level personnel
