General Purpose

Perform all activities related to underwriting review and quotation of new business and renewals for DFA product lines.

Job Duties and Responsibilities



  • Process new business and renewal requests in accordance with appropriate state and federal regulations. Analyze and underwrite risks to determine eligibility and proper rate classification for quoting of new and renewal business
  • Actively participate in enrollment activities, including compilation of renewal notifications
  • Effectively communicate program benefits and features, underwriting criteria, and eligibility rules to prospective and existing clients, regional sales agents, broker partners, and customer service center staff. Provide information within established departmental timeframes
  • Monitor new business and processing output to ensure accuracy of initial billing
  • Process requests for claims. Analyze claim submission to ensure accuracy and completeness of information and eligibility for recovery. Submit approved claims to insurance carrier. Track claim through claim payment, intervening as necessary to ensure timely, accurate payment
  • Meet performance objectives for timeliness of quote turnaround, policy issuance, file maintenance and documentation, and technical data integrity for the underwriting, rating, and/or enrollment systems
  • Manage difficult or moderately complex cases and issues through resolution, keeping management appropriately informed
  • Assist in the development and enhancement of processes and procedures, underwriting tools, and workflows to ensure pricing accuracy and process efficiency; participate in internal project work (10-15% of the time)
  • Perform case-specific risk assessments
  • Complete account level rate development and conduct customer negotiations with other underwriting areas and sales for assigned book of business and prospects
  • Develop recommendations related to market competition, product development, and market pricing decisions
  • Assist new hires and/or underwriters in training
  • Collaborate with departmental staff and marketing team to develop marketing literature, information mailings, enrollment documents and other program materials
  • Keep current on client issues, industry, and market trends. Maintain knowledge of all relevant legislative and regulatory mandates and ensure that all activities are in compliance with these requirements
  • Follow corporate procedures, and through the use of corporate-defined technology, maintain weekly and monthly reports for use by management
  • Maintain proper level of professionalism and proactively work to ensure confidentiality standards are met and are in compliance with or exceed state and federal (HIPAA) requirements

Education and Experience



  • Undergraduate degree in business administration, finance, or related curriculum (or equivalent combination of experience and education)
  • 2 to 5 years of related insurance experience
  • Certification and/or License - Appropriate license or obtain within 12 months of employment (must perform required continuing education coursework to maintain license); additional may be required during course of employment


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Solid understanding of general underwriting procedures and practices for area of focus, including appropriate state and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of and skill with Microsoft Office Suite and company computer systems
  • Solid (proven) analytical and problem solving skills
  • Able to assess financial risk based on multiple information sources
  • Able to effectively manage own time, activities and resources
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Able to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines
  • Able to perform tasks and duties under general direction
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English
