Position Summary

The Designer III must demonstrate the skill sets and aptitude necessary to effectively guide people. This person will occasionally lead a group of junior designers or Computer Aided Design (CAD) operators. They will apply creative design skill, knowledge of manufacturing techniques, and Computer Aided Design Drafting practices to the review of layout, assembly, and detail drawings for mechanical, structural, piping, electrical, and electronic equipment of simple to moderate complexity for a variety of projects at Oceaneering's Marine Services Division (MSD) in Chesapeake, VA. This person will review sketches and other graphic information for use within technical documents (e.g. Operations and Maintenance Manuals) and proposals. A Designer III will have responsibility for the design department personnel and assure all design work is produced to established department standards. Originality and imagination are key to this position, as there are typically restrictions to space, size and/or weight that are applicable requiring invention of systems/components that do not currently exist.


Duties And Responsibilities
  • Work with the Design Supervisor in developing a budget and schedule for work assigned to the group.
  • Assign work and ensure the budget is maintained and scheduled dates are met for this work.
  • Perform independent reviews and/or original design and interact with engineering and manufacturing personnel to ensure performance and efficiency of manufacture, assembly, and integration.
  • Verify technical accuracy and completeness of all drafting.
  • Tasking will include review of drawings, layout and detailed design of mechanical systems using various drafting techniques (AutoCAD or SolidWorks).
  • Interface with clients.
  • Supervise work of one or more designers on multiple projects.
  • Mentor all design personnel within the group when needed.
  • Fully proficient individual contributor.
  • Make decisions on complex and difficult situations independently.
  • Exhibit strong knowledge of own professional discipline, and general knowledge of related disciplines.
  • Build relationships within and across teams and delivers key technical content to influence stakeholders.
  • Support the development of bids and proposals.
  • Support engineering activity with solid modeling to prepare models for export to engineering analysis/simulation software including merging and meshing of parts and application of load vectors under the direction of the Design Supervisor.
  • May perform ship checks and site visits. Travel may be required up to 5% of the year.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • Associate degree in CAD or related engineering field, or 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Minimum ten (10) years' experience working on Military projects.
  • Minimum seven (7) years' experience using 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD is required.
  • Intermediate computer skills using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Demonstrated understanding of the ASME Y14 drafting standards.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen who is not a dual citizen of any other country.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.

DESIRED:

  • Formal Training in use of solid modeling software (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Experience with technical writing (e.g. writing specs, procedures, white papers, manuals, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of U.S. Navy specifications and requirements related to Structural, Mechanical, Piping and Electrical drawings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Background knowledge in government and commercial contract requirements.
  • Familiarity with Product Lifetime Management (PLM) software is not required but preferred.
  • Self-motivated, focused individual with strong attention to detail and high ethical standards.
  • Performs basic engineering tasks and conventional design that may be varied in nature.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, standard specifications, and SUBSAFE requirements.
  • Ability to work as part of team of leads, managers, and technical personnel to support multiple projects.
  • Strong organizational skills and analytical / logical approach.
  • Ability to synthesize diverse information (technical, schedule) and exercise good judgment.
  • Exhibits sound technical judgment and some independent evaluation, originality and ingenuity are expected.
  • Candidate will have to perform in an ISO-9000 rated company in a rapidly changing and demanding atmosphere.
