Job Summary

The C&J Nyheim Plasma Institute (NPI) at Drexel University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track assistant research professor position in Plasma Engineering. The successful candidate will assist on grant-funded projects with investigators at NPI and create their own independent line of research. This is a non-tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Research Professor with yearly approvals based on available funding and satisfactory performance. Candidates for this position must have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemcial Engineering, or closely related fields and have expertise and research experience in the following: Gliding arc discharges, plasma assisted tar reformation, and plasma assisted water decontamination (for eg: PFAS). The start date for the position is September 11, 2023, or as soon as the position is filled.

Essential Functions



  • Contribute to analysis and writing of manuscripts.
  • Assist in execution and project management of research projects.
  • Assist in supervision and training of undergraduate and graduate research assistants, as well as laboratory technicians working at NPI.
  • Perform experiments for research projects such as plasma assisted tar reformation, and plasma assisted water decontamination.
  • Engage in development of scaled up plasma discharge systems for energy and environmental applications.
  • Assist in management of assigned lab facility at the Nyheim Plasma Institute.
  • Write extramural grant proposals.


Required Qualifications



  • Minimum of a PhD or Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • Minimum of 3+ years of prior research experience or graduate studies in the following areas:

    • Applications of gliding arc discharges
    • Plasma assisted tar reformation
    • Plasma assisted water decontamination etc.


  • Deep knowledge of plasma chemistry and plasma engineering is required.
  • Established record of research in applications of gliding arc discharges, plasma assisted tar reformation, and plasma assisted water decontamination.
  • Excellent record of collegiality and collaboration.
  • Commitment to team-science and research collaboration.
  • Evidence of innovative thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Studies in the following areas:

    • Applications of gliding arc discharges
    • Plasma assisted tar reformation and;
    • Plasma assisted water decontamination etc.




Physical Demands



  • Typically sitting at a desk/table
  • Typically standing, walking
