The Advanced Capabilities and Technologies Group researches and develops high risk / high reward technology for advanced ground and satellite systems that are used for space domain awareness, space control, earth observation and scientific missions. Our work focuses on the development of novel concepts, instruments and algorithms. Projects range from laboratory-scale technology/concept development to delivery of large ground- and space-based prototypes that are transitioned into operational use. The group integrates expertise in a wide range of disciplines, including physics, astronomy, engineering, applied mathematics and computer science.

Job Description

Group 91 - Advanced Capabilities and Technologies - is seeking a technical staff with a background in physics, aerospace engineering or a closely allied field to support experimental designs and setup, hardware/software integration, and laboratory measurements.Working with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, physicists and software developers, this individual is expected to participate in multiple aspects of technology development including laboratory testing, system integration, and field data collection. The Technical Staff will need to be self-motivated to excel with limited oversight, while at the same time working cooperatively in a technical-team environment. Occasional travel to field sites to participate in measurements may be required.


Job Requirements


  • PhD in Experimental Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely allied field. In lieu of a PhD, a Master's and 3+ years of relevant experience will be considered.
  • 3 years of research experience
  • Research experience in advanced electro-optical, electromagnetic and/or optical techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive, design, conduct, and analyze complex experiments
  • Demonstrated experience with experimental data-acquisition and processing systems
  • Experience with software for instrumentation control (ie MATLAB, C++, LabView)



Preferred Skills:



  • Experience with space systems a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including ability to communicate experimental results to Government sponsors who may not be technical experts
  • Expertise in hypersonic control systems, and thermal control
  • Hypersonic & aerothermal modeling experience
  • Experience in novel satellite design & simulation
  • Hardware experience, particularly in building payloads
