When hiring restrictions are lifted, a permanent lab manager position may open.

* Temporary staff employees are ineligible to receive benefits (leave, health coverage, State service credit, etc.). They are, however, covered by Worker's Compensation provisions.
However, any non-permanent employee hired to work 30 or more hours per week for three months or more (cumulative of all positions, and not designated as variable hour worker), must be offered the chance to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan, within 30 days of their eligibility. Any non-permanent employee hired to work less than 30 hours per week (cumulative of all positions or designated as variable hour worker - i.e. student workers) are measured during designated measurement periods. If they average 30 or more hours per week over a designated measurement period, they will be offered the chance to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan and will be notified of instructions.

Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, or related field. A master's degree is preferred
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Strong knowledge of lab safety and compliance standards.
Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
2-3 years of experience in an analytical chemistry/environmental laboratory.
Experience in using and maintaining analytical instruments.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for the position of environmental laboratory manager. The Lab Manager will oversee safety, training, operations, and administration in the environmental engineering research and teaching laboratories, serve as the central coordinator for safety and compliance, and support the research and teaching activities for students, postdocs, and faculty.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Safety & Compliance: e.g., observe and enforce laboratory safety rules at all times; coordinate inspections; maintain records for regulatory inspections and audits; maintain chemical inventory; manage hazardous and biological wastes; and respond to incidents.
  • Training & Personnel: e.g., lead onboarding, safety training, and instrument use training sessions; manage safety training records and lab user records.
  • Instruments & Operations: e.g., oversee daily laboratory activities to ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results; coordinate/perform maintenance and calibration/validation on laboratory equipment; troubleshoot and resolve instrumentation problems in a timely manner; manage and update service contracts; assist instrument procurement and installation; create and update SOPs.
  • Process Improvement: e.g., identify opportunities for workflow optimization and efficiency improvements; develop, adopt, and optimize new analytical methods.
  • Communication: e.g., engage with faculty/staff and lab users for all lab-related issues; Serve as the point of contact to interact with internal (e.g., EHS, biosafety, FM, BES, and IT) and external parties (vendors and service providers) for all lab-related issues
