Departmental Overview

The UC Berkeley Student Union is a department within the Division of Student Affairs and is the administrative & advising support arm of the ASUC (Associated Students of the University of California) Student Government. This complex serves all students, faculty, staff, and visitors seeking to create and experience an inclusive campus community, thereby enhancing the student experience at UC Berkeley. To this end, we provide quality services and programs that foster experiential learning opportunities and ensure a sustainable organization. With direction from the ASUC Student Union Board, we derive income from student fees, retail operations, vending, food service, and a variety of self-operated units such as the Art Studio and Events Services.

The Student Union Facilities Maintenance & Operations (SUFMO) manages and operates multiple facilities, including the MLK Jr. Student Union, Eshleman Hall, Anthony Hall, and Anna Head Alumnae Hall. As a University amenity to the student experience, MLK Jr. Student Union and Eshleman Hall are required to provide building operations during the day and evenings. Our professional and student staff value providing high-quality customer service while fostering a safe, secure, and operable environment for the campus community and visitors.

Position Summary

The position is responsible for overseeing and managing various essential functions within the Student Union, contributing to both student success and the overall operations of the building. The Assistant Director of Facilities Maintenance position is responsible for maintaining a positive environment for students while overseeing the Student Union's facilities. Key duties include providing essential services for student success, and amenities like dining, event spaces, and recreational activities. The role also oversees building maintenance and repairs, including infrastructure, utilities, and technology, as well as supporting the Director of Facilities with capital improvement projects to ensure compliance with regulations. Additionally, the position supervises custodial services, ensuring cleanliness in open areas, offices, and event spaces, and conducts safety training to prepare staff and students for emergencies. It also involves managing keycard access, key control, and coordinating with security personnel to ensure seamless operations. This role is crucial in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for the university community, while ensuring that facilities remain functional and compliant with safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, schedule, and direct the daily work of the Facilities Coordinators staff, including the custodial team, and communicate with other campus partners such as the University's Facilities Services to upkeep the maintenance and repairs for the Student Union facilities and functional areas.
  • Maintains performance metrics and standards to ensure excellent service is extended to Student Union Facilities staff and custodial teams.
  • Ensures other routine or emergency maintenance issues and service calls are handled promptly and according to established processes, in collaboration with the Student Union Facilities Operations Supervisor.
  • Maintains facility-wide preventative maintenance program and also administers emergency preparedness for the Student Union department and building residents with other Student Union Facilities Unit Leadership.
  • Lead capital improvement projects and major repairs with assistance from the Student Union Facilities Director.
  • May coordinate the activities of security, security cameras, electronic access, and physical keys.
  • Assist with budget tracking, cost estimates, and reporting on maintenance operations.
  • Recognizes operational and facilities related processes managed by the Student Union Facilities unit and recommends improvements.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of policies and procedures relative to facilities maintenance, equipment, customer service, dispatch, building maintenance, safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including active listening, critical thinking, ability to multi-task effectively, persuasion/negotiation, mentoring, leadership/supervision, problem solving, operations analysis and quality control analysis.
  • Working knowledge in supervising facility maintenance and improvements along with building maintenance work to include one or more of the following: basic plumbing and pipefitting, carpentry, painting and plastering, service of machinery, electrical maintenance and custodial.
  • Experience working in a university, college, student affairs setting and/or similar organization.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, student-oriented environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with unionized work environments and collective bargaining agreements.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $109,000.00 - $118,000.00.

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
  • This is an exempt monthly-paid position.
