Position Summary

The Senior Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) Specialist reports to the Senior Health, Safety and Environmental Manager and will be primarily responsible for developing and maintaining the Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) programs within the STERIS Plymouth, Minnesota location. In this role you will work with site operations to implement HSE related initiatives and/or strategic objectives to improve workplace safety, risk reduction, training and internal audits against applicable STERIS Corp, local, state and federal regulations. The Senior HSE Specialist will play a key role in ensuring site safe work environment for all Associates, visitors and Customers.


In this role you will assist the organization with the modernization of site HSE procedures, guidelines and other HSE documents, ensuring alignment with ISO 14001 and 45001 standards.



This position requires working onsite in our Plymouth, MN location.

What You'll Do as a Senior Health, Safety & Environmental Specialist

HSE Support and Administration (85%)



  • Assist in compliance assurance with all federal and state Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements including reporting metrics and data to STERIS Corp and the respective governing bodies such as OSHA and others.
  • Accountable for assisting to ensure Associates with certifications/licenses are up to date and meet the necessary requirements. This includes, but not limited to CPR, AED, First Aid, Hazcom, New Hire Orientation and Occupational Health surveillance testing.
  • Lead and facilitate risk assessment team in performing job hazard analyses.
  • Assists the corporate HSE staff in analyzing HSE leading and lagging metrics for global operations, identifying emerging trends or target hazards and recommending appropriate remedial action. Data analysis includes but is not limited to; Injury performance rate charts, Total Recordable (TRIR) and Lost-time (LTIR), Severity Rates, leading indicators, etc.; Nature, type and demographic of injuries; Flash Reports (Navigator) by parent/daughter configuration, and Results of Internal audits.
  • Investigates incidents including near misses. Facilitates root cause analyses with a collaborative team (e.g., production, facilities, engineering).
  • Assists in the management e.g., program development, training and monitoring of a safety observation program.
  • Assist with management of worker's compensation cases including Transitional Work Duty and interface between the site and Workcare.
  • Support workplace safety conditions & practices audits.
  • Participates in emergency response planning, training, and drills. Supports
  • Supports site/division safety team meetings.
  • Develops and provides various HSE training to site Associates as required by the site. Maintain appropriate HSE training matrixes within the company LMS.
  • Monitors and supports the site's Safety Data Sheet program in Cority and chemical approval processes.
  • Serves as a resource and technical advisor regarding the Navigator Global Operating System and to help ensure that HSE issues/concerns are identified and addressed on a proactive basis
  • Provides timely/effective review of Corrective/Preventive Actions that are assigned to site personnel.
  • Under direction, prepares various reports, compiling and maintaining statistical information for leading and lagging HSE control charts and related dashboards. Prepares and distributes meeting agenda, records meeting minutes for committee meetings and other important meetings (department, etc.) and prepares and distributes minutes to the appropriate person(s).
  • Works closely with the HSE staff to set up training classes, which includes sending the meeting notice, tracking the attendees, and other various tasks, as needed. This also includes coordinating or finalizing logistics such as setting the location of the training and room set up.



Environmental (15%)



  • Assists in efforts to ensure compliance with all environmental requirements including reporting metrics and data to STERIS Corp and the respective governing bodies such as Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) and others.
  • Help ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemical (hazardous and non-hazardous) waste.
  • Supports and provides environmental awareness and compliance training and coordinates 3rd party training for personnel at all levels of the organization, which may include large group training sessions.
  • Works with manufacturing and operational teams to ensure safe handling of chemicals. Work cross functionally to fully engage employees, contractors, and vendors in the HSE process, expectations, and requirements

The Experience, Skills and Abilities Needed

Required:



  • Bachelor's degree with 5 years of relevant experience, or Associates degree with 9 years' experience working in health, safety, and environment field.
  • In lieu of a degree a High School diploma or GED with 13 years' experience working in health, safety and environmental field
  • HSE IT solution experience which includes implementing or maintaining new technologies.
  • General awareness, understanding and practical experience in supporting HSE programs in conformance with ISO 14001 and 45001 standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.



Preferred:



  • Certified Safety Professional Certification (CSP)
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist Certification (CIH)



Other:



  • Project management skills and proven ability to execute results.
  • Analytical skills, ability to develop reports, manage data quality, develop dashboards and KPI performance reporting using Excel or Tableau.
  • Highly organized and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and communication skills, and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of Associates and management.
  • Strong relationship building skills, able to instill trust and influence at multiple levels in the organization.
  • Training skills.
  • Experience in Tableau, Microsoft Power BI or other business intelligence reporting software would be beneficial.

Pay range for this opportunity is$84,362.50-$109,175.00. This position is eligible for bonus participation.

Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed. Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.
