Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Department of Psychology in the College of Science and Engineering at the University of North Carolina Wilmington ( UNCW) invites applications for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2026.
The successful applicant will serve as a core faculty member in our APA-accredited PhD program in General Clinical Psychology. The specific area of research is open; however, we especially encourage applications from candidates whose work can contribute to translational research in our department's training clinic.
Research or clinical experience in assessment is valued, though not required. In addition to providing clinical training and supervision for doctoral students-particularly in work with adult populations-applicants will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, recruit and mentor graduate students, and engage in departmental and university service.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Doctorate: PhD in Clinical Psychology and completion of an APA-accredited internship. Please note: ABD candidates will be considered; however, the PhD must be conferred by August 1, 2026, to be eligible for employment
  • Licensure: Licensed or license-eligible in North Carolina. Candidates are expected to obtain full licensure prior to tenure
  • Program Participation: Ability to serve as a core faculty member in the General Clinical PhD program
  • Clinical Supervision: Experience providing clinical supervision in psychological therapy and/or assessment
  • Research: Prepared to establish and maintain an independent program of research

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Research Funding: Preference for applicants whose research program has established or strong potential for extramural funding
  • Research Area: Open to all areas; however, alignment with the program's clinical training focus on adults is especially valued. Interests or expertise that contribute to translational research in the department's training clinic are highly desirable
  • Assessment Experience: Research or clinical experience in assessment is valued, though not required
  • Clinical Training & Supervision: Preference for candidates committed to high-quality clinical training and experienced in supervising doctoral students working with adult populations
  • Teaching: Preference for candidates with experience teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
UNCW is an 18,800-student campus located on the scenic North Carolina coast. It is a public Carnegie R2 doctoral University institution (high research activity).
The Psychology Department has 32 full-time faculty members and serves over 875 undergraduate and 89 graduate majors. The department operates successful Ph.D. programs in Clinical Psychology, Psychological Science, and Applied Behavior Analysis and a Neuroscience & Behavior Master's program.

The General Clinical PhD program follows a scientist-practitioner model with a cognitive-behavioral clinical focus on adult populations. The program is fully APA accredited through 2031.

College/School Information
The College of Science and Engineering offers a variety of programs leading to Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, as well as Doctor of Philosophy degrees in applied coastal and ocean sciences; pharmaceutical chemistry; integrative, comparative, and marine biology; and psychology degrees. The college also offers combined bachelor's/master's degree programs in information technology/computer science and information systems, computer science/computer science and information systems, and B.S. in mathematics/M.S. in mathematics. To implement its academic programs, the college provides instruction and research opportunities in the natural and behavioral sciences, information technology, data science, computer science, mathematics, pre-engineering, and engineering. The eight academic departments in the college provide courses of study in each of these areas, in addition to interdepartmental programs in information technology, cybersecurity, and digital arts. A 2+2 in engineering; and 3+2 programs in computer science and electrical or computer engineering; and physics and electrical engineering, are also offered in the college. Post-baccalaureate certificate programs in environmental studies, applied statistics, and geographic information science are also available.
CSE students work with distinguished faculty and scientists, use cutting edge technology, and conduct impactful research. Faculty-directed research projects empower CSE students to apply what they learn inside the classroom and laboratory to real-world situations and prepares them for a variety of careers or advanced study.
