How You'll Help Transform Healthcare:Performs a variety of tasks associated with the application, management and removal of orthopedic casts, splints, and braces as directed by the physician/ physician's assistant. Functions under the direction of the physician, physician's assistant, RN or LPN and Orthopedic Technologist II. Assists the physicians and other staff with the coordination and practice of patient care delegated and in accordance with the institutional standards of practice. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served. Is an entry level position to broaden knowledge scope to prepare for certification and advancement to an Orthopedic Technician II.

No supervisory responsibilities or duties. Position functions under direct supervision of Physician, Advanced Clinical Practitioner or Orthopedic Technologist III. Resolves most issues and problems but refers the complex issues and problems to supervisor. Communication is generally limited to persons within the immediate work unit or department. Accesses, enters and/or updates confidential information as a regular responsibility of the job. Appropriately shares information in performance of job. Makes decisions based on confidential information. Work requires moderate effort for such activities as bending, stretching, stooping, pushing or walking. Occasional heavy lifting. Occasional exposure to injury and frequent exposure to environmental hazards to include blood and bodily fluids requiring standard precautions. May be exposed to infectious diseases, bio-hazardous materials and combative patients. Work is performed in patient care environment and is often fast paced, requiring use of prioritization skills. Work is performed following prescribed policy and procedures, which call for little or no interpretation. Criminal History check is required for this position.

The Orthopedic Technician I

  • Assists physicians and staff in delivery of direct medical care in a high volume, clinical setting.

  • Applies and removes orthopedic castings, splints, braces, and ace wraps.

  • Applies basic dressing changes.

  • Performs patient/family education to include casting care, follow up, wound care, removal of splints per physician/physician's assistant direction and alterations in activities of daily living required to enhance casting therapy. Documents education provided and patient's level of understanding.

  • Assists with patient triage.

  • Helps maintain orthopedic supplies. Communicates supply usage for inventory purposes.

  • Resolves most issues and problems but refers the complex issues and problems to supervisor.


What We Require:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent education required. Commitment to work toward national certification in orthopedic technology required. Completion of basic medical terminology course and basic skeletal anatomy, provided by Carilion Clinic.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Effective interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills required. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served. Understanding the theory and application of skin skeletal traction.
