The Welder II joins, fabricates, and repairs metal parts by applying appropriate welding techniques, such as MIG, TIG, and arc welding, based on blueprints and specifications. The Welder II will weld a variety of metals completing welding details on materials ranging from heavy machined parts to thinned wall components using weld jigs, fixtures, special machine racks and frames, and like items.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Join, fabricate, and repair metal and other materials using various welding processes like MIG, TIG, and stick welding.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, schematics, and diagrams to determine the correct welding process and ensure products meet requirements.
  • Inspect completed welds to verify structural soundness and quality, and use measuring tools to ensure accurate fit and dimensions.
  • Set up and adjust welding equipment, and operate other tools and machinery like hand tools, grinders, and cranes.
  • Load, unload, and move parts and materials using tools like hoists, pallet jacks, and forklifts.
  • Follow all safety protocols, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Complete required paperwork, which may include job routing, time reporting, and quality records.
  • May be required to train or assist less experienced welders
Requirements

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or its equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in manual and automatic gas tungsten arc and/or shield arc welding, completion of an accredited training program will be considered.
  • Brazing and soldiering skills, preferred.
  • If necessary, be able to demonstrate ability to perform above skills on a test piece.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Possess skills necessary to maintain accurate documentation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all applicable written and operation examinations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all applicable certifications.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Perform delicate weld operations on very expensive components and assemblies and other difficult details. May necessitate the adaptation of available fixtures.
  • Work from specific approved procedures and complex blueprints. Work in close cooperation with weld engineer, weld inspector, and other authorized personnel.
  • Reads and strictly complies with weld blueprints, weld procedures, and work instructions.
  • Grinding to remove slag inclusions, excessive weld, burrs, or other pre-post steps required to make an acceptable weld.
  • Must become certified to all requirements of the company/client pertaining to welding and/or brazing, imposed on the company/client both now and in the future.
  • Inspect all work using appropriate measurement instruments.
  • Refers all issues/problems to supervisor for disposition.
  • Completes and maintains all documentation as directed by work instructions and policies.
  • Cleans machine, tooling, and parts.
  • Performs machine maintenance, housekeeping, and other duties as assigned by supervision.
  • Follows and complies with all operation instructions, work rules, and safety policies.

Working Conditions:

Works in a fabrication shop environment. Requires intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting and maneuvering material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward.

  • Ability to perform moderate to labor intense work, occasionally lifting heavy items exceeding 50 LBS, non-repetitive, up to 25 pounds frequently, repetitively performing such activities as lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing, pulling, standing, walking, grasping, kneeling, stooping, reaching for extended periods of time.
  • Typically in a comfortable environment but with regular exposure to factors such as temperature extremes, moving machinery, loud noise, and fumes, which may cause noticeable discomfort.
