SUMMARY:

The Flynn Pediatric Oncology Nursing Fellowship offers a comprehensive paid 8-week summer experience that immerses nursing students in the field of oncology. Fellows gain observational and hands-on exposure to inpatient and outpatient oncology nursing, including roles, responsibilities, treatment plans, and patient care practices alongside Registered Nurse (RN) mentors. The program also includes learning opportunities in medical/surgical oncology, clinical research and trials, infusion services, palliative care, and patient education and support programs.

In collaboration with program managers, each fellow will complete an evidence-based practice (EBP) research project focused on pediatric oncology nursing. The project is presented at the program's graduation ceremony to Rhode Island/Hasbro Children's nursing staff and invited guests, marking the culmination of this enriching professional development experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates foundational skills in observing, assessing, and communicating patient needs.
  • Recognizes changes in a patient's condition and appropriately reports relevant information to the healthcare team in collaboration with the RN mentor.
  • Provides basic direct patient care and participates in care planning under the guidance and supervision of the RN mentor.
  • Accepts patient report alongside the RN mentor.
  • Performs non-therapeutic tasks as delegated.
  • Follows proper procedures when completing non-therapeutic functions as directed/supervised under the guidance and supervision of the RN mentor.
  • Shows continuous professional growth through daily activities.
  • Actively identifies and acknowledges areas for performance improvement.
  • Performs lab testing as credentialed, adhering to established policies and protocols under the guidance and supervision of the RN mentor.
  • Collects specimens and conducts basic testing under the guidance of the RN mentor.
  • Demonstrates accountability and responsibility in role performance.
  • Maintains attendance to fulfill 36 hours per week for the entirety of the 8-week program.
  • Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control, in accordance with established hospital department policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Performs other related duties under the guidance and supervision of the RN mentor.

OTHER INFORMATION:

Compensation - the Flynn Fellowship Oncology Nursing Student Intern will be paid a competitive stipend for the fellowship program.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

  • Active licensure as a Nursing Assistant in the State of Rhode Island
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association
  • Applicant must be a rising senior nursing student who attends a four-year Rhode Island BSN program accredited by Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or a Rhode Island resident who attends an out-of-state BSN program accredited by CCNE.
  • Must have achieved and maintained a 3.0 GPA and be in good standing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking. Exposed to all patient elements. Will be required to lift/turn patients and equipment. Repeated bending, squatting, stooping.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse within the scope of Hospital and department policies and procedures. Refers specific complex problems to RN mentor and/or unit manager where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required Performs approved nursing procedures as delegated and under the guidance of the RN mentor and in compliance with Brown University Health policies and procedures.

Pay Range:

$17.00-$25.31
