Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Winston Center on Technology and Brain Development at the University of North Carolina conducts rigorous scientific research to understand the impact of technology on the developing mind and brain. Our research on the role of technology in brain development drives an international movement that prioritizes human wellbeing within human-tech interaction. As a pan-campus research center, we seek to facilitate transdisciplinary studies, discussions, and the dissemination of information to support work across multiple fields of study.
Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to advance the research of Dr. Anthony Vaccaro at the Winston Center on Technology and Brain Development. Specifically, this person will assist with studies examining neural and emotional responses to social media content. The responsibilities include participant recruitment, data collection, data management, handling delicate functional near-infrared spectroscopy and eye-tracking equipment, assistance with undergraduate research assistants, and managing study protocols. Strong interpersonal skills are essential.

This individual is responsible for helping the PIs with human subjects-related research tasks and following established procedures. Basic computer skills are required, including familiarity with OSX and Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office, and basic statistical knowledge. Strong interpersonal skills are essential. The research assistant will ensure the studies' compliance with protocols and objectives.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with research methodologies and protocols
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Strong problem-solving
- Basic computer skills in OSX and Windows operating systems
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Experience working in a person-facing role (human research, clinical settings, customer-service, or any role that requires attention to participant comfort)
- Previous experience with data collection in research or clinical settings
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R).
- Previous coding experience (e.g. Python, MATLAB)
- Familiarity with neuroimaging methods
