Mechanical Engineer - Field Engineering

Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineer - Field position will utilize problem-solving techniques and engineering principles such as statics, machine design, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, material selection, and fabrication to develop solutions at our field locations and satellite manufacturing plants of Austin Powder Company (APC). The Mechanical Engineer will review, interpret, and support the development of specifications, develop concept diagrams, create final designs, prepare the bill of materials, support equipment assembly, and resolve mechanical commissioning issues. This position will also support the field and manufacturing operations through equipment reliability improvements, root cause failure analysis, and maintenance predictive and preventive programs.

Key Responsibilities and Duties



  • Ability to uphold the company's mission, vision, and values. Promote safety awareness in both work practices and company culture.
  • Meet with, interface with, and coordinate designs with the various stakeholders, including SHES, operations, maintenance, and outside vendors/contractors, during development phases from concept development through construction.
  • Responsible for mechanical equipment design from concept through the development of final layouts and bills of material.
  • Design and develop mechanical/process systems using 3D modeling software.
  • Create Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (PID)
  • Preparation of specifications, technical documentation, operating and maintenance procedures.
  • Carries out engineering solutions and designs in compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and Safety, Health, and Environmental requirements.
  • Coordinates with operations to ensure correct equipment installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Identify, evaluate, and correct potential or existing equipment issues and effectively communicate corrective actions to appropriate parties.
  • Communicate technical information to management.
  • Regular attendance at the assigned project sites
  • Assist with the procurement of equipment, materials, and services and the selection and hiring of subcontractors.


Education and Experience



  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in Mechanical Engineering from a 4-year college or university, with at least five years of related experience.
  • Experience in chemical manufacturing, food and beverage manufacturing, or other relevant industries.
  • Experience with Inventor 3D and/or Solidworks 3D and AutoCAD is required.


Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities



  • Must maintain a professional relationship with other company employees, contractors, and customers. Experience working with outside vendors and outsourced contractors.
  • Working knowledge of PSM (process safety management) processes and systems is desired but not required.
  • PE accreditation is desired but not required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite software (Word. Excel, Teams).
  • Must be able to work flexible hours based on business needs.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.


Work Environment and Physical Demands



  • This position supports Austin Powder Company locations in the United States and Canada.
  • Work is performed in both a remote office setting and in field operations.
  • United States or Canada (Remote)
  • Willingness and ability to travel to company locations in the United States and Canada on a scheduled and unscheduled basis, approximately 30%
