Job Summary Retention Coach (Inaugural Position) Mesa Community College invites applications for an inaugural Retention Coach position-an exciting opportunity to help design, launch, deliver, and scale a comprehensive first-year program and new student orientation program with a focus on persistence, academic momentum, and timely completion. The Retention Coach will help build the retention program from the ground up-developing outreach strategies, coaching practices, tracking systems, and partnerships-while working directly with students to address academic, personal, and institutional barriers to success. This role is ideal for a student-centered professional who is energized by creating new systems, shaping practice, and directly impacting student success. As an inaugural member of the retention coaching team, the Retention Coach will play a critical role in establishing consistent, equitable, and proactive support structures for new, first-year, at-risk, adult, and returning students. Position Overview The Retention Coach provides proactive, first-year case-management-based coaching aligned to Guided Pathways and First-Year Experience frameworks, supporting students from entry through successful transition into their academic pathways. This position contributes directly to the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of first-year retention strategies and new student orientation programming. The Retention Coach works collaboratively with advising, enrollment services, faculty, financial aid, tutoring, and student support programs to ensure a coordinated, student-centered experience that removes barriers and promotes early academic momentum. Essential Functions All Student Affairs positions require consistent, full on-site attendance and engagement as an essential job function in order to provide in-person student affairs services, including but not limited to: student advising, support services, case management, programming, student walk-in services, daily operational support and collaboration, etc.-which precludes remote or hybrid work options for any Student Affairs role regardless of position classification. 30% Generalist Retention Coaching o Develop and implement effective personalized academic success plans tailored to student unique goals, strengths, and challenges. o Conduct accurate and timely outreach, information, and feedback to students and help them create action plans for improvement. o Support, guide, and empower students through their first year to build the formation for continued success and develop skills necessary to advocate for themselves. o Provide targeted coaching and academic support focused on math persistence and course success, particularly in developmental, gateway, and high-enrollment math courses. o Collaborate with math faculty, tutoring centers, and learning labs to align coaching with course expectations and supports. o Partner with faculty across programs to reinforce effective strategies embedded in coursework. o Use course performance data to identify risk points and intervene early with students enrolled in math-intensive pathways. o Provide specialized coaching to support student success in English, writing, and composition courses. o Collaborate with English faculty, writing centers, and tutoring services to reinforce aligned strategies and expectations. o Support students in building confidence and persistence in writing-intensive coursework. 30% Early Alert and Student Support o Assist with monitoring the early alert system for first-year students and implement interventions to promote retention. o Provide monthly/semester reports to the Director, Academic Advising/Assistant Director, First-Year Success regarding at-risk students o Help students to identify, develop, and implement learning strategies and study skills specific to course materials. 15% Program Coordination 15% Data Tracking, Reporting and Compliance 5% Leadership o Develop and utilize a robust data strategy and other technological advances to create a model retention program for in-person and online students. o Act with integrity. Improves individual and unit performance. 5% Other Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two years of student services or college teaching experience, or experience coordinating, administering, planning, or evaluating programs. OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation. Desired Qualifications A Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling, student personnel, or college student affairs leadership or related field from a regionally accredited college or university. B One year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two years. C Direct experience working within a First-Year Experience (FYE) model, including orientation, first-year seminars, success courses, learning communities, or cohort-based programming. D Demonstrated experience delivering and implementing proactive, case-management, success coaching, or intrusive advising for first-year, exploratory, at-risk, adult, or returning students, with a focus on persistence, academic momentum, and completion within a Guided Pathways or structured onboarding framework. E Subject-Specialized Roles: Experience supporting students in mathematics success initiatives, including placement/placement alternatives, corequisite or accelerated pathways, quantitative reasoning, and gateway math completion. OR Experience supporting students in English, reading, or writing success initiatives, including placement/placement alternatives, corequisite models, first-year composition, and academic literacy development. F Experience utilizing early alert systems, CRM platforms, SIS, degree audit tools, student success technologies, MS Office Suite, Google Applications, Zoom, etc. G Experience translating and using quantitative and qualitative information, data dashboards, KPIs, and student success metrics to guide strategy and operational decisions. H Proven ability to collaborate with academic affairs, faculty leadership, enrollment services, institutional research, IT, and student affairs units related to retention, enrollment, completion, or strategic planning. I Proficient in English and a second language. Bilingual (Spanish fluency).
