The Area Safety Manager holds a multi-discipline responsibility for leading the implementation of all safety initiatives for the respective areas. This role ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT and local, state, and federal safety regulations while fostering a culture of safety among all employees. In addition, this position works closely with region teams to minimize risk as well as direct and monitor safety initiatives.

Responsibilities of Position:



  • Partner with Senior Corporate Safety Manager to develop safety initiatives to improve safety across the business
  • Implement, direct, and monitor safety initiatives to promote and create a safe working environment
  • Direct and facilitate accident investigative process, root cause analysis & follow up for motor vehicle and industrial situations and oversee closure of corrective actions
  • Plan and administer departmental budget and maintain cost-effectiveness
  • Conduct ongoing health & safety inspections of facilities, operations, equipment, and processes to ensure compliance of Corporate Safety, environmental, fire, and governmental (DOT, OSHA, local agencies) policies and regulations.
  • Develop and interact daily with Sub-contracted employees and services to ensure DOT compliance.
  • Work with the Senior Corporate Safety Manager to develop and implement safety standards operating guidelines, safety programs, and awareness
  • Supervise subordinate safety personnel; supervisory duties include but are not limited to instructing; assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; selecting new employees; acting on employee problems; recommending and approving employee promotions, transfers, and discipline, and recommending discharge
  • Review the work of the safety team for effectiveness; evaluate and make recommendations as appropriate; offer training, advice, and assistance as needed In order to hold them accountable
  • Prepare, receive, review, and/or process various records and reports including incident and accident reports, fire reports, inspection reports, inspection/safety guidelines, health and sanitation reports, manifest reports, logs, various reports required by regulatory agencies, safety data sheets, etc.
  • Interact and communicate with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, management staff and employees, subordinates, corporate personnel, guests, vendors, emergency response personnel, law enforcement personnel, insurance representatives, auditors, inspectors, various government agencies, hospital/health care personnel, etc.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving, and adhering to safety policies in all work environment areas
  • Promote safety culture through positive reinforcement, coaching, and leading by example
  • Participate in safety committees and cross-functional teams
  • Perform other duties as assigned



Supervisory Responsibility:



  • This position will manage 1-5 employees
  • This position will oversee and direct other managers



Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:



  • Excellent leadership verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have a strong background in dealing with people under difficult circumstances
  • OSHA/industrial safety background is required. Successful applicant must be able to furnish documented experience in the above areas as well as references/certificates
  • Excellent computer skills in a network environment; proficient in Windows and Microsoft applications proven track record of successful project and personnel management as well as leading teams to meet/exceed goals
  • Must possess strong planning/organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving, analytical, critical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Process and results oriented with a commitment to organizational success



Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety Management, Occupational Safety, or other related field
  • 10 plus years of experience in a safety management position
  • Must have at least five (5) years experience in keeping detailed and accurate records in a safety environment
  • Must have at least five (5) years experience in reading & interpreting federal, state, and local safety regulations
  • Documented experience in speaking to a group and conducting training sessions, two (2) years experience preferred



Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:



  • Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 35 lbs
  • Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 50 lbs
  • Frequently working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
  • Frequently working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
  • Rarely stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
  • Rarely climbing and/or balancing
  • Continuously sitting/standing/walking



Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:



  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste
  • Ability to travel between offices, as required
  • Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Must be available for 24-hour emergency calls
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver's license (if applicable)
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language
