Who we are and what we do:

The Tennessee Office of the Attorney General is seeking an attorney to join its Consumer Protection Division in Nashville. This Assistant Attorney General will engage in investigations and litigation to protect the rights of Tennessee consumers against everything from small-time scam artists to misconduct by the most powerful corporations in the world. Tennessee is a national leader in consumer protection and attorneys in the Division enjoy significant responsibility and numerous opportunities to work on high-profile and meaningful cases enforcing state and federal consumer protection and antitrust laws.
The Division engages in the full range of consumer protection, including data privacy, deceptive advertising, antitrust, advertising substantiation, financial disclosures, government imposters, and price gouging, among others. The Division works closely with consumer protection enforcers from other states and the federal government on matters of regional or national impact including, most recently, serving in the leadership of the national opioids settlement negotiations, holding Meta accountable for the mental health harms its Instagram platform causes to young users, as well as antitrust suits against Google and Apple.

Key Responsibilities:

AAGs participate in all phases of consumer protection investigations and litigation. Primary responsibilities include:

  1. Trying cases;
  2. Collaborating with other attorneys, paralegals, and support staff within our office;
  3. Employing the State's pre-suit investigative tools to gather information;
  4. Interviewing potential witnesses and taking testimony;
  5. Analyzing documentary and economic evidence and formulating legal theories;

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Obtaining, providing, and evaluating electronic discovery;
  2. Working with economists and other expert witnesses;
  3. Coordinating with other state and federal enforcers in joint investigations and litigation;
  4. Drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, and other court documents;
  5. Arguing motions; and
  6. Negotiating settlements as appropriate.
  7. Four or more years civil litigation work experience preferred;
  8. Consumer protection or antitrust experience preferred;
  9. Complex commercial litigation experience preferred;
  10. Strong analytical, legal writing, and oral advocacy skills;
  11. Demonstrated successful negotiation skills; and
  12. Electronic discovery experience.
