The Automated Fabric Spreader is responsible for preparing upholstery fabrics for cutting by operating and monitoring automated spreading equipment. This position ensures that materials are laid out accurately, efficiently, and according to production requirements, supporting high-quality output for downstream cutting and sewing operations.

Core Responsibilities

  • Operate automated spreading equipment to lay out upholstery fabrics, vinyls, and specialty materials according to production specifications.
  • Set up fabric rolls on the spreader, ensuring correct alignment, tension, and smooth feed throughout the spreading process.
  • Inspect materials during spreading to identify flaws, shading issues, or inconsistencies before they reach the cutting stage.
  • Maintain accurate layer counts and verify that spread lengths match work orders and cut plans.
  • Handle and stage fabric rolls including loading, unloading, labeling, and transporting materials to and from storage areas.
  • Monitor equipment performance and perform basic adjustments to maintain consistent spreading quality.
  • Document material usage and waste, reporting discrepancies or opportunities for improved efficiency.
  • Keep the spreading area clean and organized, following all safety and housekeeping standards.
  • Communicate with cutters, sewing teams, and production leads to ensure smooth workflow and timely completion of spreads.


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with automated or manual fabric spreading equipment preferred.
  • Ability to read and follow production tickets, spread charts, and material specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially regarding fabric grain, pattern alignment, and defect identification.
  • Physical ability to lift and maneuver fabric rolls up to 85 lbs and stand for extended periods.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for operating industrial equipment.
  • Familiarity with upholstery fabrics and manufacturing processes is a plus.
  • Reliable communication skills and ability to work within a team-based production environment.
