Director, Human Resources - Electrical Cable and Flexible Conduit

Who We Are Looking For:

We are currently searching for a Human Resources Director for the Electrical Cable and Flexible Conduit (ECFC) business to be based out of our New Bedford, MA location. Reporting to Vice President, Human Resources - Electrical, this person will be responsible for delivering business results through human resource best practices and process management. They will be leading a team of 4 HR professionals located in our 3 ECFC facilities.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree, a minimum of 10 years progressive success in various HR assignments, and experience in labor relations and negotiations. Experience in lean manufacturing or a business system-based company is a plus.

Additional Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Human Resources



  • Act as a proactive thought partner to the Vice President, Human Resources for Electrical, passionately delivering H.R. functional excellence.
  • Act as the day-to-day business partner for Atkore's VP/GM, Electrical Cable and Flexible Conduit.
  • Contribute as a key HR leadership member actively managing corporate wide HR initiatives. Will lead cross-functional teams on these initiatives.
  • Actively participate in the monthly HR Lean Daily Management cadence for the overall organizational and Atkore Business System (ABS) action plans.


Team Management



  • Hire, train, and mentor HR staff of 4 direct reports.
  • Set performance expectations and provide regular feedback.
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities effectively.
  • Monitor performance and identify areas for improvement.


Employee Relations



  • Drive engagement and alignment and a results-oriented culture in supporting business.
  • Manage anonymous complaint process with effective investigation and follow-up.
  • Deliver training regarding compliance, performance management and cultural values on a consistent basis. Townhalls and roundtables should have a standard cadence.
  • Provide appropriate coaching and mentoring where appropriate.


Labor Management



  • Execute effective negotiations planning process, including executive approval, parameter development and compliance.
  • Negotiate labor agreements with streamlined health care and pension costs and best in class work rules.


Legal Compliance



  • Ensure compliance with the Atkore Code of Ethical Conduct and all legal requirements related to human resources.
  • Stay up-to-date on changes in labor laws and regulations


What You'll Do:



  • Lead and develop a team of both union and non-union manufacturing plant Human Resources Business Partners across a geographically diverse footprint.
  • Act as the day-to-day business partner for functional leaders within Electrical Cable and Flexible Conduit with an emphasis on talent management to build the best team possible.
  • Partner with leaders within your client groups to drive talent management and performance management, which includes succession planning, training and development, performance review completion, etc.
  • Contribute as a key HR leader for the Electrical Cable and Flexible Conduit HR team, drive process improvements for enterprise-wide HR programs and best practices, including those that you eventually become the 'owner' for.
  • Provide HR support in new initiative rollouts in the form of innovative ideas, communication, change management, and thought partnership.
  • Continuously improve HR metrics and the HR dashboard, including focus on improving time-to-fill, employee engagement, and turnover. Report out on HR metrics and prepare presentations as required.
  • Conduct research into personnel programs, policies and activities and employment law and recommend strategies, changes or innovations where appropriate.
  • Handle full-cycle recruitment for all positions within client groups. These will be mostly made up of professional positions.
  • Manage and effectively investigate allegations of harassment and other aspects of mismanagement and implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Drive 100% on-time delivery to the annual HR calendar activities (merit review, organizational leadership review, compliance action plans, performance reviews, etc.).
  • Provide coaching to managers regarding employee relations, difficult conversations, and process improvements.
  • Maintain necessary records in our Human Resources Information System (UKG).
  • Ensure compliance with employment related laws (EEO, OSHA, FLSA, ADAAA, FMLA, etc.).
  • Liaise with your manager and/or peers on complex HR issues.


What You Bring:



  • A Bachelor's Degree (this is required; additional higher education is great!).
  • 10+ years' experience in a Human Resources, preferably in a mid-size company (1,000 - 10,000 employees) in a manufacturing industry with experience in multiple HR disciplines and Labor Relations.
  • The ability to manage a project and the desire to 'own' enterprise-level initiatives.

  • A capacity for a fast-paced, high-growth environment. We're looking for someone that is adaptable to changes in the work environment, comfortable with multiple competing demands and who is able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events in a calm and logical manner.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of highly integrated process solutions - a standard work mind set is a must.
  • Keen insight into human and organization behavior.
  • Ability to influence senior leaders and high potential talent.
  • Able to work independently with minimal daily guidance or direction.


Within 3 Months, You'll:



  • Complete your Atkore Immersion program.
  • Understand how your job will help deliver Atkore's strategy
  • Gain an understanding of your team and key contacts
  • Have developed relationships with the key stakeholders for this role.
  • Be fully competent in navigating Atkore's HRIS (UKG) and be almost completely familiar with the day-to-day 'standard work' for all HR process relevant to Atkore's HR Business Partners.


Within 6 Months, You'll:



  • Be comfortable with the day-to-day activities necessary to serve your client groups.
  • Drive to strengthen the team's commitment to Atkore's core values of Accountability, Teamwork, Integrity, Respect and Excellence
  • Lead an engaged relationship with your team and key contacts
  • Partner with leadership on best org design, and drive consistency in roles & responsibilities across Atkore
  • Have assumed ownership of one or more enterprise-wide initiative or HR best practice team.


Within 12 Months, You'll:



  • Be a leader within an efficient team that supports Atkore's strategy having built a reputation as someone who is reliable, uses good judgment, and hits deadlines.
  • Have reflected significantly and have outlined a vision for how you and your team of HR business partners can best enable Electrical Cable and Flexible Conduit's success.
  • Have clear short- and medium-term objectives defined for you and your team that are built to ensure excellent on-going HR support and meaningful change management within Electrical Cable and Flexible Conduit.
  • Understand the information needs of your team as related to Human Resource functions as well as business partnership to the organization.
  • Mastered your day-to-day duties and have not only taken ownership over one or more enterprise-wide initiative or HR best practice team, but you have actively made improvements.
