The State Highway Administration's (SHA) Office of Transportation and Mobility Operations (Anne Arundel County) is currently recruiting for a Highway Operations Technician I position. This is an Interview and Hire position that is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below.
This announcement may also be used for future vacancies throughout the state of Maryland for SHA.

Nature of Work: This is the entry level of traffic management center operations work involving traffic systems control, incident/congestion management, and communications. Employees undergo training to learn to operate state of the art, computerized traffic management workstations designed to facilitate traffic flow and minimize congestion. This work requires the operation of electronic traffic detection and communications systems. Employees must be able to communicate, comprehend, and process audio and visual information via various forms of hardware & software. Employees receive close supervision from a Highway Operations Technician IV or another designated official. All duties associated with this position are carried out within the Traffic Management Center, duties will be performed inside the Traffic Management Center building. Employees may be assigned to report to a location in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County, Prince George's County, or Frederick County based on operational necessity.

Special Requirements:
- Must be available on-call 24 hours a day (responses to various emergencies) and will be required to provide the employing agency with 24-hour contact telephone number.
- This position is a safety sensitive. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs, therefore, is subject to drug testing.
- Employees are required to work rotating shifts, to include evenings, weekends and holidays at any of the operations center located in any MDOT Traffic Management Center in the state.
- May be required by the appointing authority to successfully complete CHART training and certification programs to maintain employment.
